17 September 2010, Kuala Lumpur – In today’s The Star Online news, SS Quah interviews Dato’ Tan Chin Nam, Malaysia’s chess supremo since 1974, about his recent decision to stand down from sponsoring chess tournaments for the next two years.
Dato’ Tan wants chess organisers to develop new relationships with other possible sponsors who might be able to bring the chess development to the next level. He just wants to give others a chance to show their mettle in developing the chess game to a higher plane. Who knows, the next Malaysia’s GM might just materialise by then?
In the meantime, Dato’ Tan just wants to be like any other chess enthusiast, simply to play, have fun and participate in chess tournaments and learn from past mistakes.
As such, the annual Malaysian Chess Festival event will still go on but will not be in the current format such as the Arthur Tan’s name to the Malaysian Chess Open.
