Kasparov Did A Simul in Malaysia’s PICC

26 April 2014, Kuala Lumpur – The Malaysian Chess Federation in collaboration with other NGOs co-organised a fund-raising dinner at Putrajaya International Convention Center (PICC) in conjunction with Ex-World Chess Champion, GM Garry Kasparov’s visit to Malaysia. Malaysia’s Sports Minister, YB Khairy Jamaluddin gave a welcoming speech and honoured Kasparov’s visit here to Malaysia during the dinner.

Garry Kasparov did a six match simul with chess enthusiasts and won 6-0 with 15 minutes time control.

MCF President Tan Sri Ramli Ngah Talib (2nd from right picture above) and Deputy President, Tengku Ahmad Badli Shah Raja Hussin (3rd from right) were present during the dinner and chess simul by Garry Kasparov.

During the dinner, Datuk Tan Chin Nam, “Father of Malaysian Chess” was honoured by the Sports Minister for his many generous support of chess. He was the founding president of the Malaysian Chess Federation in the 1970s. Dato’ Tan has spent over 30 years of his life as benefactor and organizer of nearly every great chess event held in Malaysia. A generation of young chess masters developed to maturity thanks in significant part to his organisational efforts and financial generosity. Dato’ Tan describes chess as “ a game that forces one to think, it teaches discipline.”

Kasparov captured in Moscow

18 August 2012, Kuala Lumpur – Have read on chessbase.com, chessdom.com and hairulov.blogspot of news that Garry Kasparov, the ex-world chess champion has been arrested as he was trying to enter to watch the Pussy Riots trial in Moscow.

Chessdom.com reported that the ex world champion Garry Kasparov has been arrested at the Pussy Riot trial protest. AFP informs quoting Interfax, “About 20 people have been arrested outside the court since the start of the judgement, according to AFP reporters at the scene. They include former world chess champion Garry Kasparov, now an opposition political figure.”

This happens just hours after Pussy Riot have been found guilty of hooliganism by the Moscow court.

According to initial information Kasparov was one of 400 protestors outside the court. With massive police presence the crowd was divided into two groups and after confrontation from the Pussy Riot supporters, Kasparov and 20 more participants have been arrested. According to unconfirmed report by his editor’s twitter account (see update 3) he was later beaten by the police, while the police itself claims (see update 5) that Kasparov was biting the hand of an officer during the events.

Garry Kasparov is the chairman of the Human Rights Foundation’s International Council.
