Datuk Tan continues to play chess actively and was a participant of the recent Senior Lee Loy Seng Open during the Malaysian Chess Festival 2011 last August 2011.
Plans are afoot by Datuk Tan to make the next Malaysian Chess Festival 2012 more grander than this year.

28 January 2011, Kuala Lumpur – In today’s The Star Online portal, SS Quah discusses the spirit of camaderie and having fun at prevailing team chess tournaments. He briefly touched on the recently concluded University Science Malaysia (USM) Team Chess Tournament held in Penang and the meeting of new and old friends.
Apparently the university has a chess and bridge club and the students organise the annual chess individual and team tournaments to earn credits for their co-curriculum activity, as a result, the chess community benefits from this annual chess event held by the chess club. Keep it up guys! Good work!
The ongoing Tata Steel Chess Tournament in Wijk aan Zee, Netherlands was also highlighted by the article. It has some of the big names in chess with three groups (A, B, C) of 14 grandmasters competing in a single round robin format chess tournament.

The Star reported today that “ The wife of the late Bernama sub-editor Lim Chong was moved to tears when he was given a posthumous award in conjunction with Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah’s 65th birthday.
The Darjah Kebesaran Ahli Mahkota Selangor (AMS) was accepted on Lim’s behalf by his son Yew Seng, 22, yesterday.
Tan Hong See, 50, said she was proud of her late husband’s achievements and contributions as a journalist.
“He should have been here to take the award himself,” she told reporters at the Istana Alam Shah yesterday.
On Nov 23, 56-year-old Lim died of a heart attack on his return flight to Malaysia after a three-day assignment in London.
“It has been two weeks since I lost my husband. It is very difficult for me and my son,” Tan said.
“I am sure he will be proud of it,” said Tan, who bakes cakes as a hobby.
The Sultan of Selangor spent some moments speaking to Yew Seng during the conferment.
“The Sultan was very courteous. Tuanku asked me how we were holding up and whether we were all right,” he said.
Lim was awarded the AMS along with 27 other recipients.”

11 June 2010, Kuala Lumpur – In today’s The Star, Living, SS Quah discusses the happenings to the run-up of the FIDE Presidential elections in Khanty- Mansiysk. Now that both Karpov and Kasparov are in the same camp and both are former World Chess Champions and both are from Russia. It would be interesting how these chain of events will end in September in Khanty-Mansiysk, Siberia, Russia.
However the main event in Siberia will be the Chess Olympiad which will have teams from every country in the world that plays chess.

28 May 2010, Kuala Lumpur – In today’s copy of the Star, Living, SS Quah discusses the future of the Selangor Open under the care of the Chess Association of Selangor (CAS), which happens to be one of the longest run chess tournament in the country.
With the sponsorship of this year’s Selangor Open withdrawn, CAS went on its own to sponsor the chess tournament from its own internal funds. To keep the tournament alive for the future, sponsorships should be sought from potential sponsors by CAS.
Efforts towards this direction should already have begun or should continue in earnest for the sake of giving chess a future to grow further. As it is, Malaysia has no grandmasters yet, although it boasts of at least five International Masters. The grind towards increasing the pool of talented chess players and developing them further should continue as a priority.

30 April 2010 – Today in The Star - Living by SS Quah, he discusses the drama unfolding at the World Chess Championship between GM Anand and GM Topalov of Bulgaria in Sofia, Bulgaria. SS Quah could only write about the first two games only. Where both players have won a game each. Each player with White appears to be winning. However the games have reached the fourth game on Wednesday, 28th April 2010. At this moment in time, Anand is leading with 2.5 points against 1.5 points for Topalov.
The fifth game will be played tonight, 30th April 2010 and can be followed at the usual websites on the internet.

FOR most of us, playing several chess games at once is a challenge best left for experts and computers. But siblings S. Subramanian, 12, and S. Nithyalakshmi, 10, took the challenge in stride at Malaysia Airlines’ (MAS) recent Pintar Chess Programme event, where they each played more than 20 games simultaneously, directly under a Boeing 777 plane.
The first event of its kind, the internationally recognised siblings were invited to pit their brains against 27 and 23 MAS employees and families respectively at the KLIA hangar. And they certainly demonstrated their extraordinary talent.
With 22 games won, 3 draws and 2 losses, Subramanian said: “I like playing chess because it really helps improve my Maths and Science performance in school.”
He added that the most he had played with was against 30 students in Sarawak, where he won all 30 games.

Asked what his ambition was, Subramanian said, “I would like to be a pilot because I would be able to see many countries, and share that experience with my family.”
Meanwhile, Nithyalakshmi, who won 18 out of the 23 games that day said that she liked the game because it improved her thinking skills.
“I can also understand what my teacher teaches in Maths class much quicker than my friends.”
Also taking traditional dance classes, the extrovert quickly added that playing chess had been an eye-opening cultural experience.
“When we play in chess competitions around the country and internationally, we will meet many people and I get to make many new friends.”
Their father Sivanesan Subramanian has also played a big role in promoting his children’s love for the game.
He said, “There is really no limit when it comes to chess. I take them to different tournaments every week, and the Internet has been a really good source. For example, when there are worldwide games played by international champions, I would download their moves, and analyse each step with my children at home.”
MAS senior general manager of external relations Datuk Captain Mohd Nawawi Awang said: “It is good to know that we have such young Malaysians playing at an international level. Subramanian and Nithyalakshmi are home-grown talents within the programme who now have peers following their footsteps.”
The siblings were trained by Lee Siew Fai, who is a licensed aircraft maintenance engineer.
“I used to play competitive chess when I was younger, but now I would like to pass on these skills to the younger generation,” he said.
Lee had volunteered his time and expertise and introduced his brand of children-teach-children chess training method to the programme, whereby more expert chess y the stronger players would help their peers improve.
The Pintar Chess Programme is a part of Project Pintar (Promoting Intelligence, Nurturing Talent and Advocating Responsibility), a commitment by Government-linked companies to help improve the academic standards of underprivileged children.
