China, India and Vietnam Win Asian Nations Honors

27 May 2012, Kuala Lumpur – The Asian Nations Cup Team Chess Championship 2012 has concluded and Casto Abundo reports the final round 9 happenings and the final winners of the Asian Nations Cup – China.

China, India and Vietnam Win Honors Already champion after round 8, China-1 continued its dominance, beating Mongolia 3½:½ to finish with 17 match points. India blanked Iraq 4:0 to cement their silver finish with 15 points. From left are GMs Krishnan Sasikiran, Abhijeet Gupta, Parimarjan Negi, Hari Krishna Pentala and Gopal Geetha Narayanan. The Vietnam men's team with Chief Arbiter Gao Zhiqian.      Vietnam shut out Hong Kong 4:0 to win the bronze Nations Cup. It was decided at the Technical Meeting that three teams from different countries shall win Asian Nations trophies. China-2 kept pace, beating Chinese Taipei by a 4:0 shutout to finish higher with 13 points. Iran worked hard to earn its 3½:½ victory over Kazakhstan. Singapore whitewashed Yemen by the same 3½:½ score. And Indonesia beat Korea 3:1     The Chinese team with new Chinese Chess Association president Yang Jun’an (right). In the women’s division, China-1, already champion after round 8, beat Mongolia by a similar 3½:½ score as their male compatriots. India beat China-3 by 2½:1½ on the win by GM Harika Dronavalli as the other three boards were drawn. The Vietnamese Women's team with Asian Chess Federation Deputy President Casto Abundo and Chief Arbiter Gao Zhiqian. Vietnam edged Indonesia 2½:1½ on wins by Pham Le Thao and Pham Bich Ngoc. China-2 blanked Singapore 4:0 to tie India at 14 points. Iran tried to land in the medal standings as they beat Kazakhstan 3:1. Iran tied Vietnam at 8 match points each but in game points tie break had 16½ game points. Vietnam won the tie with 18 game points. China-3 had higher final score of 11 match points but as decided at the Technical Meeting that three teams from different countries shall win Asian Nations trophies, the bronze Nations Cup was won by Vietnam.

China Men, Women clinch Gold. India Men get Silver The Vietnam men's team receiving their Cup for winning the Asian Blitz Team Championship. China-1 narrowly beat Singapore 2½-1½ as IM Kevin Goh upset Chinese GM Li Chao. Ding Liren and Yu Yangyi countered to give China 2 wins. The top board game between Singapore GM Zhang Zhong and Wang Yue ended in a draw after almost five hours of play.. India inched closer to the leader after crushing Mongolia 3½-½ on wins by GMs Hari Krishna, Negi and Gopal. The board 1 game between GM Sasikiran of India and IM Gundavaa was drawn. Vietnam also smashed Kazakhstan by a similar 3½-½ slate on wins by GMs Le Quang Liem and Nguyen Truong Son and IM Nguyen Duc Hoa. Kazakhstan's IM Kiril Kuderinov held GM Dao Thien Hai to a draw on board 4 to prevent a shutout. In other matches, China-2 blanked Hong Kong 4:0, Iran whitewashed Korea 3½-½, Iraq also crushed rival Yemen 3½-½ and Indonesia blanked Chinese Taipei 4:0. With one round to spare, China-1 has won the gold and India the silver. .       Match points after 8 rds 15 - China 13 - India 11 - China-2 10 - Vietnam 9 - Iran, Kazakhstan, Iraq 8 - Singapore, Mongolia, Indonesia 5 - Korea, Yemen 2- Hong Kong 0 - Chinese Taipei China-1 won the crucial match with India.. In the women’s division, China-1 beat India 3½-½ on wins by GM Zhao Xue and WGMs Ju Wenjun and Huang Qian. WGM Mary Ann Gomes saved India from a shutout by holding Ding Yixin to a draw. The victory assured China of the gold medal. China-2 crushed Iran by a similar 3½-½ slate on wins by WGM Tan Zhongyi, Wang Jue and Guo Qi. WIM Sarasadat held IM Wang Yu to a draw to prevent a shutout. China-3 edged Singapore 2½-1½. Indonesia surprised Kazakhstan 3:1 and Vietnam followed suit with a 3:1 score against Mongolia. China Men, Women Pull Away in Homestretch China-1 blanked Indonesia 4:0 to pull away as pacesetting India was held to another 2:2 draw, this time by Vietnam. Chinese GMs Wang Yue, Li Chao, Ding Liren and Yu Yangyi scored the shutout. In the crucial India-Vietnam match, GM Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son of Vietnam beat GM Hari Krishna on board 2 but GM Parimarjan Negi evened the score for India on board 3 with a win over IM Nguyen Van Huy. The other two boards were drawn between GM Krishnan Sasikiran (above, right) and GM Le Quang Liem, and between GM Abhijeet Gupta and GM Dao Thein Hao on board 4. China-2 (left) was held to a 2:2 draw by Kazakhstan. Chinese GM Zhou Jianchao beat GM Murtas Kazhgaleyev but GM Anuar Ismagambetov struck back against GM Wen Yang as the other two boards were drawn. In other matches, Singapore outplayed Korea 3:1, Mongolia whitewashed Yemen 3½:½, Iraq outclassed Hong Kong 3:1 while Iran blanked Chinese Taipei 4:0. China-1 is a shoo-in for the title as they face the lower half in the remaining rounds.
