KL Grand Prix 2010 Finals postponed!

25 May 2010, Kuala Lumpur – In today’s KL chess’s website, Peter Long reports that the grand finale of the Kuala Lumpur Grand Prix is now postponed till the end of the year, citing chess calendar congestion.
He has also listed out the 117 participants that took part in both the Open and Under-12 categories of the Kuala Lumpur Chess Grand Prix 2010. The picture below shows the top 25 players for the open category.

Ian Udani Wins 4th Leg, KL Grand Prix 2010

Kuala Lumpur – Twelve players participated in the 4th leg of the Kuala Lumpur Grand Prix 2010 held at the Royal Selangor Club over two days, 8-9th May 2010.

Ian Udani won 5.5 points from 6 rounds of play beating 11 other players. This makes Ian Udani as the winner of the 4th Leg of the KL Grand Prix 2010. Time control used is 45 minutes.

The top 25 finishers of the four legs of the KL Grand Prix will qualify to play in the Grand Finals to be held on the 5-6 June 2010.

3rd Leg KL Rapid Grand Prix 2010, 8-9 May 2010

A little reminder that the third leg of the KL Rapid Grand Prix 2010 will be held this coming weekend, 8-9 May 2010.

1. Organisers and Sponsors
Organised by Kuala Lumpur Chess Association (KLCA) & Polgar Chess Asia with sponsorship from Malaysian Intellectual Development Foundation and the Royal Selangor Club.

2. Format, Time Control & System
There will be two sections – Open & Kids (U-12), played using the Swiss System, and the rate of play will be 45 minutes for the whole game.

There will be 4 legs, played monthly, followed by the grand finals:

First Leg: 6-7 February 2010

Second leg: 6-7 March 2010
Third Leg: 3-4 April 2010
Fourth leg: 8-9 May 2010
Grand Finals: 5-6 June 2010

Points (actual scores) accumulated from each leg will be used as the basis for qualifying for the Grand Finals, where the top 10 in each section will be given free entry and the top 25 overall finishers* in each section will be given priority in participation.

*The organizers reserves discretion in modifying the number of qualifiers.


3. Schedule

Played on weekends: On Saturdays from 2 to 5:30 p.m., and on Sundays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Participants are encouraged to pre-register with the organizers to be assured of a place as space is limited and so only 80 places are guaranteed for each leg.

4. Total Prize Fund (RM 6,600)

Each Leg:
Open:
1st Prize – RM300; 2nd – RM150; 3rd – RM100; 4th to 5th – RM50 each; 6th to 10th – RM 25 each
Kids (U-12):
1st Prize – RM150; 2nd – RM75; 3rd – RM50; 4th to 5th – RM25 each
Grand Finals:
Open:
1st Prize – RM600; 2nd – RM300; 3rd – RM200; 4th to 5th – RM100 each; 6th to 10th – RM 50 each
Kids (U-12):
1st Prize – RM300; 2nd – RM150; 3rd – RM100; 4th to 5th – RM50 each

5. Entry Fees
to be payable three days before each leg, thereafter a 50% penalty of up to the applicable entry fee may apply.

Members (KLCA & RSC):
Open: RM 15
Kids (U-12) RM 5

Non-Members:
Open: RM 20
Kids (U-12) RM 10

*The organisers reserves the right to accept and reject entries.

6. The Playing Venue
The tournament playing venue is the Card Room of the Royal Selangor Club at Dataran Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur.

Ian, Bersamina Joint Winners of 3rd Leg, KL Grand Prix 2010 Chess

Today, the 3rd Leg of the KL Chess Grand Prix 2010, declared two joint winners, Ian Udani and Bersamina Paolo. Both players are from the Philippines. Both ended with 5.0 points from six rounds of play out of a field of 22 players.

Ahmad Fadhil Nayan ended in third position with four points and Muhd Nabil Azman Hisham recovered to end up in fourth position with the same four points.
In fifth position is Azman Hisham Che Doi, Muhd Nabil’s dad with four points too!
Jax Tham ended in 13th while blogger Yat Guo Jie in 16th position with 3.0 and 2.5 points respectively.

Ian Udani Dominates 3rd Leg, KL Grand Prix 2010

Ian Udani beats Ahmad Fadzil Nayan in 4th round of the 3rd Leg of the KL Grand Prix and emerges as the clear leader with 4 full points entering the fifth round of play at Royal Selangor Club this afternoon, 4th April 2010.

Following closely behind in second place is Bersamino Paolo with 3.5 points. In the 3 points category, three players are bunched-in. They include Low Jun Jian, Roshan Singh and Azman Hisham Che Doi.

Surprisingly, Jax Tham and Mohd Nabil are having a hard time in this tournament as they are floundering at the 16th and 7th position respectively. This is a high class field of chess players and some are using this as a practice round for the upcoming Kuala Lumpur Chess Open beginning 6th April 2010.

Weekend Chess Activities, 3-4th April 2010

This coming weekend there will be a few chess tournaments around for you to choose from. However, Excel Chess Academy has delayed its First Saturday Classical Chess tournament to 10-11 April 2010. My previous post on this is related or click here.

Here are the three tournaments that you may choose from:-

a. Klang Parade Chess Championships, 3-4 April 2010. Venue Klang Parade. Click here for details. This tournament uses a rapid time control of 20-30 minutes per player per round. If you prefer to be close to a shopping mall, then this is for you, the shopper in mind.

b. KL Grand Prix 2010, Card Room of the Royal Selangor Club at Dataran Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur. Third Leg: 3-4 April 2010. Click here for details. If you prefer serene surroundings and wonderful facilities and a time control of 45 minutes per player per round, this is the one for you! Car parking facility is just next door, the Dataran Merdeka.

c. Kenangan GrandPrix Chess, Segamat, Johor. 3-4th April 2010, Venue Hall of SMK Seri Kenangan, Segamat. Click here for details. If you are from Johor or near down south or from Pahang, you might consider this tournament for yourself. Time control is 45 minutes, similar to KL Grand Prix 2010. By the way, this is the second leg of the Segamat Grand Prix chess.

For me, I will be away to Terengganu attending to a family wedding invite. Have a wonderful weekend playing chess.

KLCA has published on its blog the overall summary of points obtained by participating players in the KL Grand Prix Chess Rapids 2010 for the two legs so far held in February and March 2010.

Roshan Singh heads the list of 42 players that had participated so far for the two legs of the Grand Prix Chess Rapids.

Final Ranking, 2nd Leg, KL Grand Prix Chess Rapids 2010

Here are the final rankings of the 2nd leg of the Kuala Lumpur Grand Prix Rapids 2010 held over two days, 6-7 March 2010 at the Card Room, Royal Selangor Club near Dataran Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur.
In first place is Mohd Nabil b Azman Hisham with a near perfect score of 5.5 points from 6 rounds. This young man is going places and would surely make a strong impression in the upcoming National Age-Group Chess Championships in Penang next weekend.

In second place is Roshan Singh, son to Dr Ajeet Singh, the tournament co-organisers of KL Grand Prix. Roshan, 13 years old, scored 5.0 points from some pretty tough opponents like Jax Tham, Kaushal Khandar and Mark Siew. Roshan just obtained his FIDE rating recently and it is a high 1871. Roshan’s play is steadily improving and gaining more confidence in his own games.
In third place is veteran, Jax Tham Tick Hong, who has a FIDE rating of 2076 and always a formidable chess opponent anytime. Jax scored 4.5 points. He drew with Roshan and his only lost is against Abdul Haq Mohamed.
This leads to the fourth place winner, Abdul Haq Mohamed with 4.5 points too. While Low Jun Jian who beat me in the first round, won fifth placing. Jun Jian scored 4.0 points.

For the under-12 category, Subramaniam Sivanesan was champion with 5.5 points and little sister, Nithyalakshmi Sivanesan took second spot with 4.5 points. In third place was, Putri Rifqah bt Azhar with 4.5 points while in fourth is Amier Hamzah b Mohd Zuhri with 4.5 points too. In fifth place is Sathish Hemant with 4.0 points from 6 rounds.

3rd Round Pairings, 2nd Leg, KL Grand Prix 2010

Since I had a look at the photo of the pairings I took and had difficulty reading it, so I am reposting a better version of the third round pairings.

The current leaders with two full points from two rounds this afternoon are Mohd Nabil, Azman Hisham, Kaushal Khandar and Jason Lim.
Another bunch of players with 1.5 points includes Nik Ahmad Farouqi, Roshan Singh, Low Jun Jian and Jax Tham. For the Open category, a total of 20 players are participating in this second leg of the KL Grand Prix Rapid Chess.

For the Under-12 category of the KL Grand Prix, five players are leading with two points. They include Sivanesan Siblings (Subramaniam and Nithyalakshmi), Azam Mohd Noor, Combern Sean and Yee Jian Yang. The above is the third round pairings for the under-12 category. A total of 25 players are participating in this category. Amier Hamzah is also playing here.
The third round will begin at 9.00 am tomorrow morning and to complete four more rounds tomorrow, 7th March 2010.

Latest 2nd Leg, KL Grand Prix Chess 2010

Latest News: At the moment, there are nine registered players for the 2nd Leg of the Kuala Lumpur Rapid Grand Prix Chess 2010 that will be held this weekend, 6-7th March 2010, to be held at the Card Room of the Royal Selangor Club near Dataran Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur.

While for the Under-12 category of the KL Rapid Grand Prix Chess, there are fifteen players registered and they are as follows:-

It is anticipated that more players will walk-in for the tournament on Saturday, 6th March 2010, 12 noon. Play will commence at 2.00 pm.
