Final Round Enter Play-Offs! Yeap Eng Chiam Crowned NJM!

The final round of the 2nd National Junior Chess Championship 2009 boys’ category had to be pushed into the play-offs as the top two boards ended with draws. This resulted in four players with the same 7.0 points for Sumant, Yeap, Justin and Evan.

The panel of arbiters of the event decided to have a play-off for the four players that finished with 7.0 points, so that a clear winner can be decided and to earn the title of the National Junior Master (NJM).

In the eventual playoffs that ensued, Yeap Eng Chiam won all his three games with full points. The three round summary of results among the four title contenders is as shown below:-

WFM Nur Najiha Wins The Girl Category!

Here are the final results for the girl category of the 2nd National Junior Chess Championship 2009 held at the Pusat Kecemerlangan Sukan Cochrane, Cochrane, Kuala Lumpur from 16th-20th December 2009.

Congratulations to WFM Nur Najiha bt Azman Hisham who is crowned the National Junior Women Master (NJWM). She obtained the full 7 points from 9 rounds, with superior tie-break points.

Second place belongs to Amira Shahmina bt. Zulkafli and in third place is Latifah Kaiyisah bt. Latib, both with 7.0 points.

Sumant, Evan, Yeap and Justin Co-Leads Into Final Round 9 of National Junior Championship 2009

Finally, the rankings of the players after round 8 indicate that four players in the boys category are sharing the lead with 6.5 points with tie-break points separating them marginally.

The title of National Junior Master (NJM) will have to be one of the four players either Sumant, Evan, Yeap or Justin. Who will it be?

The decision is in their hands. Each of the four will have to ensure a win in their final round 9. If after the 9 rounds is completed, the tie-break points will decide.

For the girls, NFM Nur Najiha is alone in the lead with 6.5 points. Trailing her are three others with 6.0 points, Amira Shahmina, Latifah Kaiyisah and Siti Aisyah bt Sabirin. If Najiha fumbles badly in the final round, the three can spoil her day with an emphatic win! My bet is Nur Najiha will win the girls title of NJWM (National Junior Woman Master). But I could be wrong!

This is the final decider round 9 pairings of the 2nd National Junior Chess Championship 2009 which will be held tomorrow morning, Sunday, 20th December 2009 at the Pusat Kecemerlangan Sukan Cochrane, Cochrane, Kuala Lumpur.

In the boys category, four persons are in contention for the title of National Junior Champion (NJR) for the rest of their live! The foursome are Sumant, Yeap Eng Chiam, Justin Ong Way and NM Evan Timothy Capel all with identical 6.5 points after 8 rounds.

The results of the round 5 boys’ category that was played yesterday morning, 18th December 2009, just arrived in my email box and is published for the benefit of participating players and interested chess enthusiasts to view.

In the boys category, Sumant beat WCM Nur Nabila bt. Azman Hisham on the top board. Wong Jiawen and Yeap Eng Chiam drew on second board. Both these players are high rating players. Meanwhile National Master Evan Capel squeezes a win past Mark Siew Kit Tze and Justin Ong Way is still with his winning ways against Keok Kai En. Muhd Izz Saifuddin wins against Roshan Singh.

The current leader for the boys is Sumant a/l Subramaniam with 5.5 points from six rounds of play. While WFM Nur Najihah bt Azman Hisham leads the girls’ category with 5.5 points from six rounds of play.

Round 6 Results, 2nd National Junior Chess Championship 2009

18th December 2009, Kuala Lumpur - In round 6, Sumant drew against National Master Evan Timothy Capel in a top of the board game at the 2nd National Junior Chess Championship 2009. Yeap Eng Chiam also drew against Low Jun Jian on second board, while WCM Nur Nabila took a turn for the worse by loosing to Justin Ong Way on third board. Muhd Syakir Shazmeer Azhar won his game against Muhd Izz Saifuddin, the recent FSCC Dec 2009 Champion on fourth board.

The full interim rankings of all registered players as submitted by the organisers of the 2nd National Junior Championship 2009 (16th-20th December 2009) for both categories, boys and girls, after round 4 of play, currently being held at Cochrane, Kuala Lumpur. There are 82 players registered for the boys, while in the girls, 38 players. The full interim rankings are tabulated as shown below:-
