Another Busy Weekend Ahead For Chess (29 Jan – 1 Feb, 2010)

This coming weekend will be a long weekend for those staying in Wilayah Persekutuan as the Federal Territories Day will be celebrated on Monday, 1 February 2010. Opportunities galore for chess enthusiasts!

If you are in the Shah Alam area, look out for GiLoCatur’s announcement of Friday chess hang out for some fun with chess at some restaurant in-and- around the Shah Alam conurbation.
Then on Saturday, 30th January 2010 three events will occur concurrently. The 1st DATCC Individual FIDE Rated Weekender 2010 will continue with its fifth round play at Wilayah Complex, Kuala Lumpur with some 24 players participating of which 15 players are FIDE-rated players and 9 players are unrated. This DATCC event will continue until 1.00 pm on 1st February 2010.
Meanwhile the Excel Chess Academy, Overseas Union Garden, Kuala Lumpur will hold its Thaipusam Chess Rapid over 30th-31st January 2010 over a 10 round Swiss rapid time of 20 minutes plus 30 second increment. The third concurrent event that will occur is the 2nd Kuala Lumpur Junior Chess Championship over 30th-31st January 2010 at the Cochrane Sports Excellence Center in Kuala Lumpur for the youngsters. The one we had in December 2009 was national. This event is for the kids in and around the Kuala Lumpur area. Phew! Too many choices to choose from...[dizzy and spinning].
Then on City Day, 1st February 2010, a Blitz chess event will be held at DATCC in conjunction with the closing of the 1st DATCC Individual FIDE-Rated Weekender 2010 at 2 pm, Dato’ Arthur Tan Chess Centre, 4th Floor, Wilayah Complex, Kuala Lumpur.

Nik and Jianwen in the lead, 1st DATCC Individual FIDE Rated 2010

At the DATCC, on the 23rd January 2010, after two rounds of play today, Nik Ahmad Farouqi and Wong Jianwen are joint co-leaders with 2 full points and tie-break points of 3.5. Abdullah Che Hassan and Fong Yit Ho also had 2 full points but with 3.0 tie-break points.
The surprised co-leader is Jianwen who beat top-ranked Kamaluddin Yusof in the second round of the Individual FIDE Rated tournament for the year of 2010. Jianwen had both bishops and the Queen cornered and about to make a one move mate on Kamaluddin Yusof who played black.
Roshan Singh also made a killing today by beating Justin Ong Way in the first round of play. Justin Ong Way is also the January 2010 Champion of the First Saturday Classical Chess.
Sahir Sarifdin also surprised higher ranked Nor Ilham Shaik Ali with his first round win over his fifth ranked opponent.
However it is still early days in the tournament and anything may happen.
Here is the results table and the round 3 pairings for tomorrow morning’s play, 24th January 2010:-

Best of luck to all participating players!
(p.s. will be away to Langkawi Island for some work. :-( )
