Malaysian Chess Scenario

Port Dickson

29 June 2011, Kuala Lumpur – An update from the caretakers of DATCC and the unfolding of on-going and upcoming chess events up and down the country. Read on!

It has been quiet in KL (and DATCC) since the last Warrior event being held at the end of May. Between then and now, there were two International events held in Indonesia i.e. the ASIAN Cities and the ASEAN Age Group, the MSSM event in Penang, and other weekend events that were held out of KL i.e. Setia Chess Club Grand Prix Series in Kuantan and the KLK Perak Grand Prix in Kampar. There were smaller invitational FIDE Rated events held such as the EXCEL Event organized by Jax Tham and the Nf6 Masters event held at DATCC. But of course, the only ongoing event that still goes strong is the monthly InSoFar weekend events namely the Elite Open series, Junior series and Scholarship series that continues to strive despite the silence.

From here on, the chess community can start to look forward to the coming of two back-to-back major events in KL starting with the Malaysia Chess Festival in August and the KLCA Open in September. There is also a rumor that another major international event is being planned immediately after the KLCA Open but this can only be confirmed once the sponsors have agreed to put up the budget for the event. And with just over 6 more weeks to go before the Malaysia Chess Festival clocks off, a few events are in store for those who would like warm up as preparation for these 2 (or 3...) major events.

One of the more anticipated event is the SMK Hillcrest Chess event scheduled for 10th July - an event that was advertised since April 2011. With a lot of goodies and prizes to be given away, the organizer is expecting more than 500 players to participate in its inaugural event. Another event will take place in Perak on the same day which is the KLK Perak Grand Prix to be held in Ipoh, going into its second year after a successful series last year.

Setia Chess Club in Kuantan is also organizing its SCC Grand Prix D series event where the winners will have a chance to be invited to the Grand Final to be held in December.

Currently, UPM is hosting the MASUM Chess Championship to crown the best University Chess Team in the country and the next major chess activity will be the FIDE Arbiter's Seminar to be held in Kuala Lumpur from 30th June to 4th July.

The following is a calendar of chess events for July and August. These have been compiled from various sources as such, please contact the organizer/association for events confirmation or registration. If you would like to add your event to the calendar, or correct some of the information contained within the list, please contact Najib Wahab at najib.wahab@chess-malaysia.com

Malaysia And FIDE-Rated Chess Events

Najib Wahab - The Chess Connections
21 February 2011, Kuala Lumpur – On Najib Wahab’s new blog called  The Chess Connections, Najib’s does an analysis of chess players in Malaysia in general and the availability of FIDE Chess Tournaments available in the country at large.

Here is a sampling of Najib’s analysis of Malaysian players’ participation in 10 chess events organised locally in the country.

Based on the 10 events, the following figures were arrived:

EVENTS
TOTAL MALAYSIAN %
1 KUALA LUMPUR OPEN
111 20 18%
2 SELANGOR OPEN
71 70 99%
3 NATIONAL (OPEN)
94 94 100%
4 NATIONAL (WOMEN)
44 44 100%
5 MALAYSIA OPEN
133 26 20%
6 AMBANK CHALLENGE
52 42 81%
7 PENANG OPEN
71 42 59%
8 PENANG CHALLENGE
109 103 94%
9 GACC OPEN
110 69 63%
10 GACC (WOMEN)
50 28 56%

TOTAL
845 538 64%

Based on the Jan 2011 rating list (for the period between November/December 2011), Malaysia was the most active country in the region with 84 of our players (or 29% of that 293 players that Malaysia has in the rating list) played at least 1 FIDE rated event.

A lot of the analysis is quite revealing about the status of chess in Malaysia itself and The Chess Connections’ blog post on Malaysia is simply very interesting and should put the MCF on alert on Malaysia’s future direction.

As First-GM blogger wants Malaysia to achieve our first International Grand Master sooner so that at least Malaysia can be proud of having one home-grown GM locally, therefore instituting a local FIDE Rated chess circuit with foreign players is uppermost and a priority.

Good standing foreign chess players with IM and GM titles would help push further the rating of the event higher and creates more opportunities for our local players to succeed getting either an International Master (IM) or Grand Master (GM) norm. In this regard, efforts by Excel Chess Academy to create a FIDE-Rated chess event locally at its own chess academy is commendable and would help the cause of chess in Malaysia further and create a further pool of FIDE-rated players. With a bigger pool, the chances of creating IM and GM players among Malaysians will increase.

All this analysis is good and should be made available to MCF officials for further understanding.

DATCC Changes Management

DATCClogo 4 January 2011, Kuala Lumpur – The DATCC is undergoing a management change for the new year 2011. Here is an email from Najib Abdul Wahab explaining the changes that will occur at DATCC for all chess enthusiasts to take note.
Come 1st January 2011, the management of DATCC will change over with a new person at the helm to further expand the center to  new heights. After more than 2 months of discussion, Najib Wahab is set to take over the management of DATCC from Hamid Majid who has been managing the center for the last 3 years.

Whilst most part of the center will remain as it is now, slight changes will be made to the center to accommodate a small area for training and knowledge sharing area where patrons are able to browse through some of the chess books, magazines, bulletins, etc. collection that are available for reading. The current "lepak" area will also be relocated to allow for more playing space and a permanent electronic board has also been set for visitors to have a feel of playing on the state of art chess interaction hardware/software.

Although the complete handover date has not been ascertained, during this interim period, both Hamid and Najib will be working together to ensure a smooth transition will take place and that the activities that have been planned (and booked) for the center will continue as usual.

Najib Wahab, who has organized and arbitrate many local events including being part of the 2010 Malaysia Chess Festival, is set to announce and release DATCC calendar of activities for 2011 within the next couple of weeks. According to him, apart from the usual DATCC Weekender Series, there are also plans to continue the
KL Team League and forging relationships with other local organizers and Chess Clubs/Associations to organize more events at the center. Najib is also planning to hold small classes (for 10 students per class) to coach and teach players who are of beginners and intermediate levels. Framework and syllabus for the classes are currently being designed to ensure players will learn chess via a more structured and proper way of learning, combining ideas that are being practiced in other parts of the world with his own unique approach. The classes will also include computer interactions work, homework, exercises and plenty of sparring sessions for the youngster and beginners.

For the first month of January, all the weekends in DATCC has been fully booked by organizers right up to the Chinese New Year weekend marking a very good start for the new year. For those who would like to rent the playing hall for events (including renting the place for other board games like carrom, scrabble, etc), please forward your inquiries to Najib Wahab at +6016 338 2542 or write to him at his email address najib.wahab@chess-malaysia.com. Currently, DATCC is running a special rate of RM250 for a weekend/public holiday rental (including sets and clocks), and RM 150 for a weekday rental. The rate will increase once the center has been fully handed over which is expected to complete before the end of the first quarter.

Be on the lookout for DATCC 2011 Calendar of Activities which is expected to come out within the next couple of weeks. In the meantime, the Management of DATCC wishes all Chess players, supporters, fans and ALL MALAYSIANS a VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR - May the new year ushers in more success, prosper, wealth and health to all of us!

Salam 1 Malaysia and a Happy New Year!
Thank you and Warm Regards

Besides, IM Mas Hafizulhelmi and IM Lim Yee Weng, the name of Edward Lee Kim Han, Malaysia, also appears on the chess-results.com. All three players will be participating in the Singapore Open Chess category.
For the challenger’s group, some familiar names are Ismail Ahmad, Yat Guo Jie (my DATCC team-mate), both from Malaysia.  From Malaysia, last count was seven players all. But this is just for the challengers’ group.
For the age-group bracket, some familiar names from Malaysia are in the list. In the Under-20 /Under-16 age bracket, ten names are listed from Malaysia. One of them is Justin Ong Way and another, my DATCC team-mate, Tan Jun Feng. While in the under-12, there are about nine players listed from Malaysia. Tan Wei Hao, (1870) is notable as he played in the Individual DATCC Fide-rated Weekender in November 2009 recently and also fresh from Jakarta, Indonesia, held in early November 2009.
All in all, quite a big crowd of twenty-two Malaysian players are participating in Singapore from 9th-14th December 2009. Best of luck to our Malaysian players!
