DATCC last board win!

22 May 2010, Kuala Lumpur – Last Wednesday the DATCC Chess Team played against the teen’s team called First Saturday Chess Team in the 8th round of the 3rd DATCC KL Chess Team League 2010. The match ended in a 2-2 draw. However, DATCC’s player on third board, Suhaimi Mustafa Al-Bakri, played a magnificient game against the talented Yat Guo Jie of First Saturday Chess Team.

The Pirc Defence transpired during the game. Suhaimi played black and employed the Pirc Defence against Yat’s pawn storm on the king-side.

image

Pix 1. White castles queenside and played 9. Kb1 to protect the a2 pawn.

image

Pix 2. By move 22, black swings his knight into attack with 22…Nc3+.

image

Pix 3. By move 28…cxb3, it was obvious black had its own pawn storm on the queenside that was unstoppable. White had two last checks on the black king with 29.Qg5+ and black pushed its king to safety 29… Ke8. The last check by white was 31. Rd8+ and it was downhill for white after that.

image

Pix 4. White is under check with 36…Qa3+ and if Kxd2, then the c2 pawn queens and white loses his precious queen. With black’s two queens against white’s lonely bishop prospect in the end game, white resigned. 0-1 to black.

Suhaimi Mustafa played a cunning cat-and-mouse game in the Pirc Defence. White lost a few critical tempo to allow black to enter the game. The critical move 28.fxe5 was considered a blunder by Fritz and was the straw that broke the camel’s back. Congratulations to Suhaimi for his excellent win on board three for the DATCC chess team.

Amier Hamzah’s game against Tun Seri Lanang, 6th Round, DATCC KL Team Chess League 2010

There was a surprise win by Amier Hamzah Zuhri of First Saturday against Tun Seri Lanang of Sea Horse in the sixth round of the KL Chess League 2010 held on the 5th May 2010 recently.

As a result, there has been some requests from readers to have the game published. Najib Wahab has already published the game on DATCChess.blogspot.com today, 13th May 2010.

While fireyrook tries using Fritz and Chessbase to help present the game to you. The game is very interesting until black lost a piece.

Diagram 2. White exchanges the rooks at move 31.Rxa8 and black loses control of the c6 pawn.

Diagram 3. Black sacrifices a knight for an attack which fizzled out. Black played 33…Nxe3.

image

Diagram 4. The queens faces off in move 39 and white took the exchange 40.Qxe8.

image

Diagram 5. At this point, Amier Hamzah’s plan was to place his white king at g6 and checkmate the black king on g8. This is what he accomplished by moving his white king all the way from g1 to g6. A simple and effective plan and well executed!

image

Diagram 6. Amier Hamzah achieves his mission. His king is at g6 and in opposition of the black king. Black played 69…Ra1, too late to save his king. White checkmates black 70. Rd8#.

This was the only win by First Saturday Chess Team against SeaHorse who has Malaysia’s no. 1 chess player, IM Mas Hafizulhelmi on board 1. Despite Amier Hamzah’s board win, First Saturday Chess Team still lost to SeaHorse 1.5:2.5. Mind you, his opponent, Tun Seri Lanang, has a FIDE rating of 2081 and listed in the top 100 Malaysian chess players on fide.com.
