31 December 2010, Kuala Lumpur – At the 53rd Reggio Emilia Chess Tournament in Italy, Vallejo Pons Francisco (pix left) beats Navara David of Czech Republic in the third round. Meanwhile Short suffered a loss at the hands of Caruana Fabiano of Italy, as a result, the third round leader is now Vallejo Pons Francisco with 2.5 points.

The diagram above demonstrates the ending of the Caruana-Short chess game during the third round of the 53rd Reggio Emilia 2010-2011 Italy. Despite black having the extra pawn, it did not help matters as white has an advanced c-pawn at the seventh rank. White played 59.Qd7 allowing the white pawn to reach its queening square, c8 and taking the pin out while giving white a gain in material.
