20 August 2010, Kuala Lumpur – In today’s The Star Online, SS Quah discusses the rivalry of the opposing camps of the upcoming FIDE Elections and its impact on the South East Asian Region.
A new chess competition in a neighbouring nation has emerged that rivals Malaysia’s own Chess Festival that is about to run from the 28th August – 7th September 2010 in Kuala Lumpur. It is most unfortunate that chess players will have to make a hard choice between the two overlapping events. I guess it depends how one views it. To choose a long running and traditional chess festival event in Malaysia or a new one and upcoming that is about to give birth in the Philippines.
Chess will still benefit from holding both events, though, it would benefit chess overall by optimizing the timing of the two big chess events by staggering the timing as more chess players may participate in both events.
