FILIPINO Grandmaster Wesley Barbasa So suffered his first loss in the 43rd Biel International Chess Festival for Young Grandmasters Tournament on Friday when he fell in the fifth round in Biel, Switzerland.
The 16-year-old Bacoor, Cavite whiz kid yielded to Italian GM Fabio Caruana after 49 moves of Slav Defense using the disadvantageous black pieces.
The loss dropped So from the top of the leaderboard as he remains with 3.0 points good for a tie for 2nd to 5th places in the company of Russians GM Evgeny Tomashevsky and GM Dmitry Andreikin and GM Maxim Rodshtein of Israel.
Caruana, on the other hand seized the solod lead with 3.5 points.
In other results, Rodshtein toppled GM Anish Giri of the Netherlands, Tomashevsky split the point with GM David Howell of England, GM Parimarjan Negi of India settled for a draw with GM Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son of Vietnam and Andrekin drew with GM Maxime Vachier-Lagreve of France.
