The past weekend was exciting because, one, we had so many tournaments in a weekend, two, each has its own storyline to tell and, three, some of them were a short driving distance away of each other. For bloggers like me, it is heaven-sent. As such, I was able to go witness some of them and even participated in one of them.
The CNY Rapids has its own story, the Malaysian Women Masters 2010 definitely had its own climaxes and Armageddon playoff stories to relate, the DATCC Rookie Tornado Chess Tournament was simply a breeze for the newbies, and the UM Team Tournament Tun Syed Zaharuddin 2010, a totally different cattle of fish as it is a team tournament that engulfed 176 participating players constituting 44 playing teams.
Come this weekend, 5-7th March 2010, a choice of chess tournaments comes to a boil again.
First, we have the First Saturday Classical Chess at Excel Chess Academy in Overseas Union Garden, Kuala Lumpur with a time control of 60 minutes plus 30 second increment as it would be good practice for the National AgeGroup Chess Championships coming up the following weekend. Second, the KLCA is organizing the Second Leg of the KL Grand Prix Chess at the Royal Selangor Club near Dataran Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur on the 6-7th March 2010. This tournament begins on Saturday afternoon after mid-day registration at 12 noon. Click here for details.
Third, the Tan Sri Lee Loy Seng Perak Grand Prix Chess which will have its First Leg of the Perak Grand Prix at Wisma Belia, Kompleks Belia & Sukan, Jalan Ghazali Jawi, Ipoh, Perak. Registration starts at 8.30 am. If your hometown is near to Ipoh, Perak, then this is your golden chance to play in the home state of Perak. For those going for this tournament, they will have the added advantage of seeing GM Ziaur Rahman play as he is scheduled to join the first leg of the Perak Grand Prix. Click here for details
Fourth, the Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Seri Kenangan Grand Prix Chess will be held 6-7th March 2010 in Segamat, Johor. Though, here, if you are someone outside of Johor, you might consider accommodation options as it is a two-day event. Click here for details.
Fifth, I think the InSoFar Open Chess Tournament (FIDE-Rated) has decided to push the biweekly event from Thursday nights to Friday nights. My guess is that this week the second round of the tournament will take place, this Friday night, 5th March 2010. This tournament is held at DATCC, 4th Floor, Wilayah Complex, Kuala Lumpur. Click here for details.
There you have it the round-up of last week’s events and the coming first Saturday weekend for the month of March 2010.
Keep playing and enjoy the games of chess!
