16 January 2011, Kuala Lumpur – In the first round of the Group A of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament in Wijk aan Zee, Netherlands, three games were decisively won by Anand, J Smeets and Hikaru Nakamura, while four games were drawn.
Meanwhile in the Group B of the tournament, Luke McShane, David Navara, G.Sargissian and Z Efimenko won decisively in their respective games of round 1. The remaining three games ended in draws.
For the Group C of the tournament, T Sachdev, D Swiercz, I Nyzhnyk and D. Vocatura won their respective first round games and three other games drawn.
Here is one game of the encounter between Ruslan Ponomariov against the reigning World Champion, V Anand of India during the first round of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament 2011 in the Netherlands held yesterday, 15 January 2011.
Anand traps the white queen on the 44th move, 44…Rf6, causing the white queen to sacrifice itself by taking the knight at e5, 45. Qxe5, giving black an unassailable lead during the game. With white unable to push either the d-pawn nor the c-pawn forward after black played 52….Qb4 and black has the queen and two rooks to play with, black eventually resigned.
