Nisipeanu Wins In Ruy Lopez

14 June 2011, Kuala Lumpur - In the third round of the Kings Tournament, Nisipeanu (pix below)created a sensation by beating highly fancied Ivanchuk in a Berlin Variation of the Ruy Lopez. Carlsen drew his game, and so did Hikaru against Karjakin.







After round 3, Carlsen leads the standings with 2.0 points as shown in the table below.

Kamaluddin Wins Semi-Final Leg!

13 June 2011, Kuala Lumpur - Here is a fairly comprehensive report from Najib Wahab on the weekend's activities at DATCC.

DATCC hosted three Insofar Chess Academy events over the weekend and it was a good turnout for the Elite Open Semifinal events with 19 players taking part including IM Jimmy Liew, NM Kamalariffin Wahiduddin and Sumant Subramaniam, who just concluded his ASIAN Junior outing in Sri Lanka the week before.

In the morning session, the Rapid U-10 had 7 participants who amongst others included well known chess offspring - Mohd Saprin's 2 boys and Mohd Fairin's 2 daughters. The U-10 event was won by Haziq Aiman Nizam who scored 3 points out of 3 games to edge Kong Dak Nam with 2 points on second spot and Johnathan Ananda Leong at third with the same 2 points but a lower tie break.



In the afternoon session, another Junior event was held starting at 2:30pm. The 5th Insofar Junior Scholarship event had 9 participants - 8 of which came from 3 families. Saprin's 3 boys - Qayyim, Ghaazi and Muqqri, Avadiar of Seremban 3 daughters - Pavethra, Davithra and Sasithra, and Vinton and Ethan Wong. The 9th player was Kong Dak Nam who had stayed on from the morning event. Ethan Wong came up on top edging brother Vinton on tie break. Pavethra came third followed by Amir Ghaazi Saprin at 4th place who also bagged the best unrated player for the event.


The main event for the day was the Insofar Elite Open Semifinal leg which was played over 5 rounds with a time control of 25 minutes. Hot favorite Jimmy Liew was cruising comfortably with 3 points when he hit a brickwall in the form of Kamaluddin Yusoff who snatched a win against him in the 4th round. In his last round, a quick draw with Taulani Tukiran sealed the deal for Kamaluddin to snatch the top spot with Jimmy Liew a close second.


It was a good showing for Shreyes who sealed the 3rd spot with 4 points - his only lost to IM Jimmy in the 3rd round.


Shreyes had a good start when he beat elder brother Sumant in the first round and his good run continued in the second round when he managed to outlast Ahmad Fadzil Nayan. After his lost to IM Jimmy in the 3rd round, Shreyes secured another win against Stonemaster Mohd Fadli and in the last round, triumphed over Jax Tham to seal his 3rd placing.
Taulani Tukiran of Johor Bahru secured the 4th placing followed by Ahmad Fadzil Nayan at 5th and NM Kamalariffin Wahiduddin round up the 6th spot.

Nakamura Strikes Back!

13 June 2011, Kuala Lumpur – At the Kings Tournament 2011, Hikaru Nakamura gains his first point with a win against Nisipeanu in the second round. After two rounds, Magnus Carlsen is in the lead with 1.5 points. Carlsen drew with Ivanchuk.

Chessvibes.com reported that Hikaru Nakamura bounced back with a win in the second round of the Kings Tournament in Medias, Romania. The American grandmaster defeated Liviu-Dieter Nisipeanu in a game that lasted 78 moves and started as a Closed Ruy Lopez. TWIC added that Hikaru Nakamura beat Liviu-Dieter Nisipeanu in a very interesting Ruy Lopez. It isn't really clear to me whether Nakamura just found the best way to create problems for Nisipeanu or if the Romanian just did it to himself but Nisipeanu was at least level on the run up to first time control although with only a few minutes left until he miscalculated the consequences of 60...f3 and was immediately in a lost position.

First-round winners Magnus Carlsen and Vassily Ivanchuk drew their game, also a Ruy Lopez, while Teimour Radjabov and Sergey Karjakin also split the point, after 90 moves of quiet manoeuvring.

2nd FirstGM Thematic, 25-26 June 2011

1 June 2011, Kuala Lumpur (Repost) - The flyer is out! The second First GM thematic chess tournament is slated for 25-26 June 2011 to be held at Excel Chess Academy, OUG, Kuala Lumpur. The theme will be Sicilian Dragon. It will be over 10 rounds of twenty minutes plus 30 second increment.

1st SMK HillCrest Chess Championship 2011

Carlsen’s First Round Win At Kings Tournament

12 June 2011, Kuala Lumpur – At Bazna, Romania, the 5th Kings Tournament is taking place with a double round robin format played by six prominent chess players that included Magnus Carlsen of Norway and Hikaru Nakamura of the USA.

Chessvibes reported that Magnus Carlsen and Vassily Ivanchuk both won their first white game at the Kings Tournament in Medias, Romania. Yesterday Carlsen defeated Hikaru Nakamura in a Queen’s Gambit Declined, while Ivanchuk beat Teimour Radjabov in a King’s Indian. Liviu-Dieter Nisipeanu and Sergey Karjakin drew their game quickly.

Bernard Ng Wins Excel FIDE-Rated May-June 2011

12 June 2011, Kuala Lumpur – At Excel Chess Academy, the Excel FIDE-Rated Chess Tournament May-June 2011 has drawn to a close with Bernard Ng (pix below) being declared the Champion of the EXCEL FIDE-Rated Tournament with an unassailable 9.0 points from 11 rounds in a single-round robin format tournament.

Bernard won seven outright games, two drawn and a single loss to  Tan Hong Ghee.

In second place, Jax Tham with 8.5 points. In joint third are Tan Hong Ghee and Najib Wahab. Both scored 7.0 points.

In fourth place, significantly is Kung Soon Heng with 6.0 points.

CJ Yao Creates Upset, Bernard Leads

12 June 2011, Kuala Lumpur - At the Excel FIDE-Rated Tournament, CJ Yao created an upset by beating top seed Tan Hong Ghee in a Sicilian Opening. Bernard Ng is leading with 9.0 points. While Jax Tham is second with 8.5 points. But the giant killer was Mr CJ Yao! He scored 4.5 points. Tan Hong Ghee finished with 7.0 points.

Kings Tournament In Romania

11 June 2011, Kuala Lumpur - the 5th Kings Tournament 2011 will take place in Bazna, Romania from 11-22 June 2011. The Internet Chess Club reported that last year the Kings Tournament in Medias (near Bazna) in Romania was upgraded to a Grand Slam event. And its the same this year, the only difference being the tournament goes from strength to strength with an even stronger field and the added side attraction of seeing in action three of the best and exciting young players from a newer generation in the game.

So who will be King of Kings in this six-player, double round-robin? Its headed by world #2 and defending champion Magnus Carlsen, who will be playing his first classical tournament since Tata Steel in January. Carlsen is favorite to win, but he will come under pressure though from his closest rivals in world #'s 5, 6 & 8Sergey Karjakin, Vassily Ivanchuk and Hikaru Nakamura. And completing the field is Teimour Radjabov and Liviu-Dieter Nisipeanu.

And for the first time, the tournament is also getting an upgrade to full live commentary coverage on Chess.FM! So follow the commentaries in the ICC!
