Jimmy Liew Leads In Seniors Open

20 August 2011, Kuala Lumpur - In the 2nd KLK Tan Sri Lee Loy Seng 2011, Malaysia's IM Jimmy Liew is leading after three rounds with 3 full points. IM Jimmy Liew now meets with GM Kayumov Dmitry in today's fourth round on top board. This chess event is part of the Malaysian Chess Festival being held at Cititel MidValley Hotel, Kuala Lumpur.

20 August 2011, Kuala Lumpur -The round 4 pairings of the DATMalaysian Open is up. Cao Sang, the defending champion, drew his third round game. Six players are with three points - Lu Shanglei, Dimakiling Oliver, Wang Rui, Li Shilong, Wang Jue, and Barbosa Oliver.

Final Standings Excel Senior FIDE-Rated 2011

19 August 2011, Kuala Lumpur – Here is the confirmatory final complete standings of the concluded Excel Senior FIDE-Rated Tournament July / August 2011 held at DATCC over several weekends in July and August 2011.

Greg Lau (Pix above) and Jax Tham are in joint first with 9 points. In joint third position are Choo and Eddy Kwan with 7.5 points each. In fifth place is Wahid Karim with 7 points. Sixth rank went to Bernard Ng with 6.5 points while Subramaniam with 6 points, ended in seventh position. Tail-enders in sequence are CMF, Abu, Ibrahim Yaacob, Dato Tan Chin Nam and Sirajudeen.

Hou Yifan Wins Rostov GP

16 August 2011, Kuala Lumpur – At the Rostov Women’s Grand Prix, Hou Yifan of China, the reigning Women’s World Champion, became the new Rostov GP champion with 8 points. The Rostov GP is the first leg of six Grand Prix events to be played in four countries – Russia, China, Armenia and Turkey.

Chess.com reported that Women's World Champion Hou Yifan finished on a score of 8/11 to claim victory in the first Women's Grand Prix of the 2011/12 series in Rostov.

After a tremendous 5½/6 start to the competition, Hou never looked likely to be caught.

Second place goes to Kateryna Lahno, the only player to beat Hou in their individual game.

Humpy Koneru, who will challenge Hou Yifan for the world title in Nov/Dec could only finish in the middle of the 12-strong field.

Chessdom.com reported that FIDE announces the Women's Grand Prix 2011-2012 which will give qualification to the Women's World Championship match 2013. The schedule of the six events is the following:

1-15 August 2011, Rostov, Russia
6-20 September 2011, Shenzhen, China
8-23 October 2011, Nalchik, Russia
30 May - 13 June 2012, Kazan, Russia
16-30 July 2012, Jermuk, Armenia
16-30 November 2012, Istanbul, Turkey

In total 18 players will participate - 10 qualifiers as per regulations, 6 nominees from the organisers of each tournament and 2 nominees of the FIDE President.

Update On Malaysian Chess Festival!

16 August 2011, Kuala Lumpur - Here are the latest news and updates of the various chess tournaments lined up for the upcoming Malaysia Chess Festival that will begin tomorrow.

DATCC reported the following updates - "With yesterday being the final closing date for the remaining 3 events, the number of participants playing in the Malaysia Chess Festival can now be confirmed as follows:

1. 8th IGB Dato' Arthur Tan Malaysia Open - 96 players (It was 133 players last year)
2. AmBank Malaysia Chess Challenge - 36 players (It was 52 players last year)
3. 2nd KLK Tan Sri Lee Loy Seng International Seniors Open - 24 players (It was 18 players last year)
4. Merdeka Individual Rapid Chess Tournament - 76 players (It was 107 players last year)
5. ASTRO Merdeka Open Rapid Team Chess Championship - 79 teams (It was only 70 teams last year)
6. SWENSEN Age Group Event - 367 players (It was less than 200 last year)

The number of participants have slightly increased for the Seniors Open event but the ASTRO Merdeka event attracted 9 team more this year compared to last year, and for the SWENSEN Age Group event, the number of children playing is almost double of last year's figure with a plane load of young players coming in from Iran to participate in this year's event.

Although some of the events are registering lesser number of participants compared to last year, the organizer is expecting some last minute entries to be received during the player's meeting tomorrow which may increase the numbers slightly but not drastic enough to exceed last year's participation.

Less than 48 hours to go before Round 1 officially starts.... "

Swiercz Dariuz, Cori Deysi Are World Junior Champions!

16 August 2011, Kuala Lumpur – At the World Junior Chess Championships 2011 in Chennai, India, the official website reported that Poland’s Grandmaster Swiercz Dariusz and Peruvian WGM Cori T Deysi emerged champions in the SDAT- Ramco 50th World Junior & 29th World Junior Girls Championship organized by Tamil Nadu State Chess Association at Hotel Vijay Park, Chennai here today.

Swiercz Dariusz caught leader Robert Hovhannisyan in the tape and finished with 10.5 points. A superior tie-break gave the Polish Grandmaster the World Junior Champion title.

 

Malaysia’s Lim Zhou Ren finished in 104th spot scoring a total of 5.0 points from 13 rounds of play. His rating performance for the tournament was 2156 compared to his international rating of 2155. Lim’s starting rank was 90.

Jax, Greg Joint First, Excel Senior

14 August 2011, Kuala Lumpur - At the Excel Senior FIDE-Rated Tournament held at DATCC, both Jax Tham and Greg Lau have secured 9 points each. In third place is Eddy Kwan with 7.5 points, while early favorite, Wahid Karim ended with 7.0 points in fourth position. Bernard Ng slowed down and has 6.0 points to show for his efforts. Ng has one game to go though.
