Negi beats Ding Liren to keep lead in Open

Irene Sukandar draws and retains lead in Women's

GM Negi Parimarjan of India (right) continued his winning streak. He needed only 30 moves to crush the French Defense of GM Ding Liren of China (left).

Negi sacrificed a pawn on the 18th move to open the center since Ding did not castle. Negi was about to win a piece at left when Ding resigned.

Negi leads alone with 6 points. Three players follow with 5½ points each, namely Yu Yangyi, Oliver Barbosa and Salem Saleh. In photo above, three Chinese play black on top boards against non-Chinese.

GM Yu Yangyi of China used the Sicilian Defense to beat GM Mark Paragua of the Philippines in 41 moves. Paragua could not stop the mate by Yu’s two Rooks (see diagram in left column).

GM Oliver Barbosa of the Philippines smashed the Dutch Defense of GM Lu Shanglei of China in 52 moves. Lu made a risky attack and Barbosa defended well. He had four pieces against Lu’s lone Queen and threatened mate (see diagram in left column)

Filipino GM John Paul Gomez misplayed the opening against the Gruenfeld defense of GM Saleh Salem of the United Arab Emirates. Gomez was about to lose a Rook when he resigned on the 19th move (see diagram in left column).

Top seed Le Quang Liem of Vietnam outclassed IM Lu Qingnan of China. Le played 59.f7 to reach the position at left. If Lu continued to promote his pawn a mate would ensue with 59... d2 60.Kf6 d1=Q 61.Ng6#.  Lu continued 59... Kxe7 60.Kg7 d2 61.f8=Q+ Kd7 62.Qf5+ Kc6 62.Qc2+ 1:0

Le is alone in 5th with 5 points.

WGM Irene Sukandar of Indonesia (left) drew with WGM Ding Yixin of China (right) in 30 moves of a Sicilian Defense. After an exchange of pieces they reached a drawn minor piece endgame.

Irene leads alone with 6 points followed by WGM Mary Ann Gomes of India with 5½. Four players trail with 5 points each, namely Eesha Karavade of India, and Chinese Tan Zhongyi, Wang Jue and Ding Yixin.

WGM Mary Ann Gomez of India (right) upset top seed GM Zhao Xue of China (left) in 70 moves. Zhao had a bad pawn structure in the endgame and could not stop the pawn advance of her opponent.

WGM Tan Zhongyi of China crushed the Gruenfeld Defense of WGM Nguyen Thi Thanh An of Vietnam in 55 moves as Tan was about to promote her pawn.

In the last game of the round to finish, Eesha Karavade of India used the English Opening to beat IM Munguntuul Batkhuyag of Mongolia in 106 moves.
