Lim Zhou Ren, Alia Bakri NJCC 2010 Champions

20 December 2010, Kuala Lumpur – Here are the full confirmatory list of winners of the National Junior Chess Championship 2010 (NJCC2010) held over five gruelling days, 15-19th December 2010 at the OCM Building in Jalan Hang Jebat, Kuala Lumpur.

Congratulations to the new champions, Lim Zhou Ren and Alia Anin Azwa bt Bakri for the Open and Girls section respectively.

Alia Bakri Wins NJCC 2010

20 December 2010, Kuala Lumpur – At the OCM Building, the Girls National Junior Chess Championship 2010 was taking place in parallel with the boys’ chess event from the 15-19th December 2010.

WFM Alia Anin Azwa bt Bakri (top pix) has been crowned the Champion of the Girls National Junior Chess Championship 2010 last night after scoring 8.0 pts from 9 rounds. She had 7 wins and 2 draws. Alia Bakri was the ladies top board chess player for team Malaysia at the recent Chess Olympiad in Khanty-Mansyisk held late September to early October 2010. She gained her title WFM at that Olympiad and winning this NJCC 2010 title tops the cream of her excellent effort. In second place is WCM Nur Nabila bt Azman Hisham scored a similar 8.0 pts but with a slightly inferior tie-break points. And in third place is WFM Nur Najiha bt. Azman Hisham, younger sister to Nur Nabila. She scored 7.0 points. She had 5 wins and four draws, all draws from top 5 players.

Meanwhile Camilia Johari ended in 11 th position with 5.0 pts, same as Anis Fariha bt Saleh, GiloCatur’s daughter, finishing in  14th spot.

Here is the ninth round game between  Jayamurthey Pavitranayagi and WFM Alia Anin Azwa bt Bakri. Black just played 38…Bxf2, next move 39…Qg1 # mate!

Five In Final Playoffs, Zhou Ren Declared Champion National Jr 2010

19 December 2010, Kuala Lumpur – At the National Junior Chess Championship 2010, drama is unfolding. Five players are in the final playoffs as they are all tied at 7.0 pts each. Mark Siew, M Syakir Shazmeer (pix left), Lim Zhuo Ren, Wong Jianwen, Subramaniam Sumant are in the double round robin playoffs at the OCM Building in Kuala Lumpur.

The format of this DRR is each player must get 1.5 pts minimum to earn 1 Match Point (MP). The time control for this is 15 minutes plus 10 second incremental.

Latest news is that Lim Zhou Ren and Wong Jian Wen both earned 2 MP. While Mark Siew, Sumant and Syakir had 1 MP after playing three games each.

To decide the winner for the title of National Junior Chess Champion 2010 an armageddon blitz was held between Lim Zhou Ren and Wong Jian Wen. After a toss of coin, Lim Zhou Ren had to play white with 5 minutes of play and Wong Jian Wen with 4 minutes of play as black. In Armageddon, white must win the game while black needs only a draw to win.

In the end, Lim Zhou Ren (pix left) prevailed as he won the blitz as white and was declared the new National Junior Chess Champion 2010 beating 72 others who had entered the open chess event over 5 days of play.

Alia, Nur Nabila Jointly Leads Girls NJ 2010

19 December 2010, Kuala Lumpur – In the girls section of the National Junior Chess Championship 2010, both Alia Bakri and Nur Nabila Azman Hisham are leading with 7 points each going into the final 9th round today at the OCM Building, Kuala Lumpur.

Mark Siew Ahead At NJCC 2010

18 December 2010, Kuala Lumpur – At the OCM building, Mark Siew (pix left) continues to maintain his lead with 7.0 points from 8 rounds of play in the National Junior Chess Championship 2010. He drew with Nabil Azman Hisham, fourth seed, in round 8 and won against Thong Yung Cheng, the fifth seed.

Meanwhile the early tournament favourite, Yeoh Li Tian is languishing in fourth place after conceding four draws to much lower rated players in the tournament.

Here is one game between Mark Siew and Lim Zhou Ren, the second seed of the tournament, which resulted in a major conquest for Mark Siew in the fifth round of the National Junior Chess Championship 2010. Mark played the King’s Indian Attack opening, a favourite of the ex-World Chess Champion, the late Bobby Fisher. Mark played a superb game and ended with two bishops, a rook and five pawns against black’s rook and four pawns.Witnessed some of the brilliant moves made by Mark Siew by replaying the game yourself in the game viewer below:-

Mark Siew Leads In National Junior Championship

17 December 2010, Kuala Lumpur – The National Junior Chess Championship being held at the OCM Building, Jalan Hang Jebat, Kuala Lumpur from 15-19 December 2010 has Mark Siew (son to Raymond Siew, First GM blogger) leading going into the seventh round with 5.5 points.

Top seed, Yeoh Li Tian, is currently with 4.5 points and is in ninth rank. Seventy-three players are vying to be this year’s National Junior Chess Champion 2010.
