Giant Kulai Hypermarket Chess Tournament

7 October 2010, Kulai, Johor – The Chess-Malaysia email group had circulated a new chess tournament to be held on the 31st October 2010 in Kulai, Johor.

It will have three categories: Open, Under-16 and Under-12. For Johoreans and surrounding neighbours of Johor may consider this tournament in their calendar to join and have some chess fun.

This tournament is jointly organised by JB Chess Association, Rakan Muda Johor Bahru and Giant Kulai Hypermarket.

Readjusted Final Tables, No-Frills Tournament

5 October 2010, Kuala Lumpur – Due to the new released National Ratings 2010 for the month of October 2010, the arbiter for the No Frills Tournament has redid the final tables for the No-Frills October Tournament held at the Excel Chess Academy, OUG, Kuala Lumpur last 3rd October 2010.

The tournament performance for some players would now be more reflective of their new ratings. The winner, Tin Jun Hao, has a much higher rating of 1564 and an even higher tournament performance of 1826!! And Ethan Wong’s new rating is 1525 and has a tournament performance of 1715!

The NOKIA GAMBIT!

4th October 2010, Khanty-Mansiysk – Fireyrook had just received one interesting handphone SMS from fellow chess enthusiast, Sirajudeen, but originated from IM Mas in Siberia, Russia with an explanation.

When most of us in Malaysia were puzzled as to why IM Mas lost in his final round 11 game against Bahrain on board 1 since it was still in middle-game stage of play.

Ladies and gentlemen, the simple explanation is that IM Mas’s phone alarm rang at 12.20 pm, his daily alarm for lunch!!! Unfortunately, the last game was played at 11.00 am in the morning, and even though the phone was off but the alarm on the phone was still triggered and rang!!

One blogger calls it the “Nokia Gambit”. haha!!

It was reported that IM Mas commented “Overall I am happy that I played this Olympiad… Gave me the confidence that I can work and still go for my GM norm, Insya’allah.”

Anyway, Malaysia still won 2.5-1.5 against Bahrain and our Malaysian team improved their overall performance from over 100 in the previous olympiad to number 92!! Well done, team Malaysia!!

October National Ratings 2010

4 October 2010, Kuala Lumpur – The October National Ratings is out! Malaysia’s Rating Officer, Mr. Lim Tse Pin has released the new list of top 20 most improved chess players for the October 2010 National Ratings.

Mr. Nikk Johari Low is the most improved player with 311 rating points and has improved from 1229 to 1540. Included in this top 20 includes  Vinton Wong, Puteri Munajjah Az-Zahraa bt Azhar (pix below) and Iskandar Danial Adam (last July’s most improved player) and Ethan Wong.

Ethan Wong (pix above) is a regular player at the Excel Chess Academy and at DATCC. He has improved from 1377 to 1525 rating points. Well done to all top 20 most improved players. A list of the top 20 is shown below.

Syakir Shazmeer Pemenang Terbuka Ampang Aidil Fitri

3 Oktober 2010, Pandan Indah – Saudara Muhd Syakir Shazmeer b Azhar telah memenangi pertandingan catur terbuka Ampang Aidil Fitri yang telah diadakan pada 2 Oktober 2010 lalu di Menara MPAJ Pandan Indah, Kuala Lumpur. Saudara M Syakir telah mengalahkan 114 pemain lain untuk memenangi permainan 7 pusingan Swiss Rapid satu hari tersebut.

M Syakir telah mengutip 6.5 mata dari 7 pusingan. Sementara tempat kedua telah dimenangi oleh Zarul Shafiq b Zulkafli dan ketiga oleh Ian Udani. Kedua-dua pemain tersebut telah mencapai 6.0 mata setiap seorang.

Closing Ceremony Of 39th Chess Olympiad, Khanty-Mansiysk

3rd October 2010, Khanty-Mansiysk – The Closing Ceremony of the 39^th World Chess Olympiad will take place in sport complex “Arena Ugra”. It will be possible to watch the ceremony online. The broadcasting will start at 20.00 local time (UTС+6) in Khanty-Mansiysk, Siberia, Russia (courtesy of ugra-chess.com)

Winners of the 39th Chess Olympiad 2010 are as follows:

Open Category: Gold: Ukraine; Silver: Russia 1; Bronze: Israel;

Women Category: Gold: Russia 1; Silver: China; Bronze: Georgia.

40th Chess Olympiad will be hosted by Istanbul, Turkey in two years time in 2012.

Malaysia Won Both Final Round 11 Matches!

3 October 2010, Khanty-Mansiysk – Latest news is that Malaysia had won both matches in the Open and Women’s category in the round 11 of the 39th Chess Olympiad in Siberia, Russia.

Malaysia vs Bahrain (Open): Malaysia won 2.5-1.5, the wins coming from boards  2 and 4 where IM Mok and supersub, Gregory Lau gave us the important board points and FM Peter Long made sure of Malaysia’s win over Bahrain. A bit puzzling was the early loss by IM Mas Hafizulhelmi on board 1.

Malaysia vs Egypt (Women): Malaysia won 2.5-1.5, the wins coming from WCM Nur Nabila over WGM Mona Khaled and Fong Mi Yen over Elgohary Fayrouz on boards 2 and 4 and supersub, Roslina Marmono delivered the winning half-point on board 3 with a draw over WIM Basta Sohair.

No Frills October 2010 – Final Result

3 October 2010, Khanty-Mansiysk – Here are the final results of the No-Frills October 2010 held at the Excel Chess Academy, OUG, Kuala Lumpur.  There were 21 players who participated in this event.

This event was won by Tin Jun Hao with 4.5 points and a rating performance of 1695 and in second place is  Ethan Wong with 4.5 points and a rating performance of 1655. Ethan’s new October 2010 rating just released by Lim Tse Pin indicates that he now has a National Rating of 1525. While in third place is Vinton Wong with 4.0 points and a performance rating of 1523. Vinton’s new October 2010 rating is 1634, an improved rating points of 278 from two months ago.

Malaysia Live Games, Round 11, 39th Chess Olympiad 2010

3 October 2010, Khanty-Mansiysk – This is the last round of the 39th Chess Olympiad and the closing ceremony will take place today, 3rd October 2010 at Siberia, Russia.

IM Mok won his board 2 and so did Greg Lau, supersub, on board 4, well done guys! Greg Lau beats an FM-titled player! And Peter Long played safe and has gotten a draw on board 3. Hey, Malaysia won the tie against Bahrain, 2.5-1.5!! Well done, Malaysia!

The Nur Nabila has won her board 2, meaning she beat a WGM-titled player and Fong Mi Yen has also won her fourth board and Roslina has gotten the draw for the third board and Malaysia has won the match against Egypt 2.5-0.5.

Alia is still playing on board 1, oblivious that Malaysia has won the match already!
