Jax Tham Wins New Nagas

21 March 2012, Kuala Lumpur - the New Nagas Standard Chess Tournament was successfully held over the 17th and 18th March 2012 weekend.

Jax Tham emerged Champion with 6 points from 7 games in the field of 16 players. Jax’s only loss was to Fong Yit San, who finished in 2nd place using the number of wins tie-break. CM Fadli Zakaria finished in 3rd place with 5 points after a close last round win over NWM Fong Mi Yen.

The next New Nagas event is being planned as a 2-day 6-round FIDE-rated event to continue the initiative to offer regular longer time control (60 minutes) weekend events into the Malaysian chess scene.

European Individual Chess Championship 2012

 

20 March 2012, Kuala Lumpur – In Plovdiv, Bulgaria, chessdom.com reports that the European Individual Chess Championship 2012 takes place in Plovdiv (Bulgaria), March 19 – April 1, 2012. It is part of the World Chess Championship cycle as the top 23 players qualify for the World Cup.

For that reason we see a total of 300 titled players, 175 of which GMs and 70 IMs. Top seeded is GM Fabiano Caruana, who was also one of the main participants at the same venue during the 2008 edition of the competition (photo here). Scroll down for the full list of participants.

Expect live games daily with analysis by Houdini and special photo reports, as well as the most interesting news from the championship on the pages of Chessdom.com.

The championship will be organized in 11-round Swiss system in accordance with the ECU Tournament Rules and FIDE Laws of Chess. The rate of play will be 90 minutes for 40 moves plus 30 minutes for the rest of the game with an increment of 30 seconds per move, starting from move one.

Anand’s Post Game Comments, German Chess League 2012

19 March 2012, Kuala Lumpur – Chessvibes.com reported that OSG Baden-Baden win over Werder Bremen in the weekend chess game of round 12 of the German Chess League 2012 last Saturday, 17 March 2012.

It was the match chess lovers had hoped for: the clinch between the titans of the Bundesliga OSG Baden Baden and Werder Bremen was a nail-biting match in which 16 top grandmasters battled it out. In the end only one game was decided: Michael Adams won his game against Laurent Fressinet, the other seven games were drawn: 4.5-3.5. With this win, OSG Baden Baden will almost certainly defend its title.

 

After the game, world champion, Anand commented:

It was a very complicated game. I thought I had an advantage and I had some ideas, but it was hard to play, because his knights controlled many important squares. I was very unhappy with 34.Bd1? and I think black had some chances after that. After the time control I was safe again.

Here is a copy of the game of round 12 played last Saturday, 17 March 2012 between GM Anand Viswanathan of OSG Baden Baden and GM Eljanov Pavel of Werder Bremen. The game ended in a draw. However OSG Baden Baden won 4.5-3.5.

18th March 2012, Kuala Lumpur – The Chess Association of Selangor and Malaysian Chess blogger have put up posters of the upcoming 39th Selangor Open 2012 from 1st May 2012 until 6th May 2012 at DATCC, Wilayah Complex, Kuala Lumpur on their blogsites.

As per the earlier teaser on the event, the 750 Years Melaka International Chess Festival offers 3 major events – the Florencio Campomanes Memorial International Rapid Chess Championship, the Historical Melaka International Chess Championship and the Historical Melaka Challenger Chess Championship. The Campomanes Memorial offers a total prize fund of USD20,000, the Melaka International RM40,000 and the Melaka Challenger RM10,000

The festival is scheduled from 20th April 2012 with the Campomanes Memorial to be held on 21st and 22nd, and the Melaka International and Melaka Challenger to be held from 23rd April to 1st May 2012. The Rapid will be played over 11 rounds using a time control of 25 minutes to finish whilst the Melaka International and Melaka Challenger will be played over 9 rounds using classical time control of 90 minutes plus 30 seconds increment from move 1.

Entry fees differ from events to events and titled players i.e. GM, IM, WGM, WIM, and players with FIDE rating higher than 2500 will be entitled for free entries. Please check the entry forms for the different rates that we have for each event offered as it will be based on each player’s FIDE rating points

Anand’s Game In German Chess League 2012

17 March 2012, Kuala Lumpur – Here is a live game between the current world champion, GM Anand Viswanathan playing for OSG Baden-Baden against GM Eljanov Pavel of Werder Bremen in the German Chess League 2012.

Team OSG Baden-Baden is the number one ranked team and Werder Bremen is currently the number two top chess chess team in the German Chess League. OSG Baden-Baden has 20 MPs and Werder Bremen, 19 MPs.

Tatiana Kosintseva Wins Womens Rapid in Turkey

17 March 2012, Kuala Lumpur – In Turkey, the European Women’s Individual Rapid Chess Championship 2012 completed last night and GM Kosintseva Tatiana of Russia emerged the winner with 9 points. In second place was GM Alexandra Kosteniuk of Russia with 8.5 points and in third place IM Elisabeth Paehtz of Germany, also with 8.5 points.
