11 April 2012, Kuala Lumpur - results of Klang Parade Chess Championship 2012 held on 7th and 8th April 2012 from Cerdik Catur Enterprise.

The Open Category was won by Muhd Syakir Syazmeer Azhar (pix above) with 6 points, the Under-18 won by Chang Sheng Yip with 6 points and the Under-12 won by Puteri Munajaah Az-Zahraa bt Azhar with 6 points.

Salam sejahtera, sekali lagi Kejohanan Catur Klang Parade telah berjaya dikendalikan oleh Cerdik Catur Enterprise dengan meriahnya.

Malaysia’s National Ratings April 2012

10 April 2012, Kuala Lumpur – The new National Rating for April 2012 has been released by MCF’s Rating Officer, Lim Tse Pin.

For the top 20 Malaysian Juniors, Yeoh Li Tian is tops with a new rating of 2114. Li Tian is currently participating in the Brunei Campomanes Memorial 2012 and making some waves there by beating a GM. This is followed by Wong Jianwen who represented Malaysia in the last World Youth Under-16 Chess Olympiad 2011 in Turkey. He is progressing well up the national ratings list.

Russian Team Chess 2012

  

10 April 2012, Kuala Lumpur - The Russian Team Chess Championship 2012 takes place 8-16 April. Multiple strong players will join their respective teams for the title race in Russia, among the top participants are Karjakin, Vitiugiv, Jakovenko, Malakhov, Caruana, Morozevich Svidler, Ivanchuk, Ponomariov, Potkin, Shirov, Kosteniuk, Gunina, Pogonina, Eljanov, Moiseenko, Savchenko, Anish Giri, etc.

The Evans Gambit

CAPTAIN WILLIAM D. EVANS (1790-1872)

In 1825 William Lewis had ' Subscription Rooms ' in St Martin's Lane, near St Paul's Cathedral, London. Here he gave chess lessons and give odds to those he believed were ready to play him. His most renowned student was Alexander McDonnell, who four years later played the famous marathon match against

LaBourdonnais. Sometime in 1826/27, a Captain Evans, visiting London, called in at St Martin's, anxious to show Mr Lewis an interesting line he used in the opening.As Lewis wasn't available, he asked McDonnnell if he would be interested in testing the opening. Here is the game they played, The first Evans Gambit played in London and won by Captain Evans in twenty moves.

More is known about Captain Evans than is normal for a chess player active in the first half of the 19th century. He was born in 1790 on a farm in St Dogwells, North Pembrokeshire. At 14 he went to sea and by the age of 29 he was a Captain of a Government Mail steamer, in a regular run between Milford Haven and Waterford. In a letter he wrote towards the end of his life he states that he discovered " his gambit " in 1824 on one of these regular trips between Wales and Ireland. It was whilst studying the Guioco Piano in Sarratt, that he suddenly conceived the idea.

Paul Morphy described the Evans Gambit as " that most beautiful of openings " and for fifty years it remained immensely popular.

Captain Evans played most of his chess with local friends in Waterford, coming to London when on leave to test his skill - and his gambit - against the finest chess players. In 1838 he played a series of games with Staunton at the Westminster Chess Club.

Due to ill health he was pensioned by the Royal Mail Steam Company when only 50. He then moved to Greece where the more temperate climate allowed him to resume his profession as captain of a steamer in the Mediterranean. He returned to Britain in 1842, often visiting London to play chess. Eventually he settled in Ostend where the tale of meeting the chessplaying Grand Duke Nicholas of Russia originated.As time passed it was begining to be called an 'alleged ' tale.

Thanks to the remarkable coincidence of Colin Russ meeting Evans' great granddaughter - and the subsequent provision of the letter sent to the Captain by the Grand Duke on behalf of " His Imperial Majesty ", the Tsar of Russia - the story has been proved to be absolutely true.

Captain Evans was buried in Ostend in 1872. An inscription on his grave reads " To the sacred memory of William Davies Evans, formerly Commander in the Post Office and Peninsular and Oriental Steam Services; Superintendent in the Royal Mail Steam Company, and inventor of the system of tri-coloured light for shipping. Also well known in the Chess World as the author of the Evans Gambit ".

Brunei Campomanes 2012 – Surprise Losses!

8 April 2012, Kuala Lumpur – In Brunei, the top seed GM Barbosa Oliver surprisingly suffered defeat to one IM Sharma Dinesh on top board of the second round of the Brunei Campomanes Memorial Chess 2012.

Meanwhile IM Mas Hafizulhelmi managed to achieve a draw against GM Dao Thien Hai, the second seed on second board of round 2. Giant killer Fong Yit Ho suffered a loss at the hands of the young IM Vakhidov Jakhongir. Yeoh Li Tian and Zulkipli Zaidan also went the same way by losing their round 2 games.

Some Of Aronian’s Winning Games Tata Steel 2012

8 April 2012, Kuala Lumpur – Here are abstracts of ChessBase Magazine No. 147, April 2012 of the 74th Tata Steel Chess Tournament 2012 held in the Netherlands. Levon Aronian of Armenia won this year’s edition of the chess tournament with a score of 9.0 points out of 14 rounds of play. Two of Aronian’s games are shown near the end of this post.

 

Below is the Aronian’s winning game against Italy’s GM Caruana Fabiano during the 74th Tata Steel Tournament 2012 in Wijk aan Zee, Netherlands.

Brunei Campomanes Memorial Begins!

8 April 2012, Kuala Lumpur - In Brunei, the Campomanes Memorial has begun at the Orchid Garden Hotel in Bandar Seri Begawan with two rounds of classical chess today.

The usual favorites won their first round game including IM MAS, Yeoh Li Tian and Zulkipli Zaidan, all from Malaysia. The biggest upset win was by Fong Yit Ho of Malaysia over GM Richard Bitoon of Phillipines in round one.

Tournament top seed is GM Barbosa Oliver of the Phillippines also won his first. A total of 40 players are participating in this Brunei edition of the Campomsnes Memorial and quite a few Filipinos are participating. Peter Long of Malaysia is chief arbiter.

Update on Melaka Chess Festival 2012

7 April 2012, Kuala Lumpur - The organizers of the Melaka Chess Festival 2012 has an update with announcements of concurrent chess events complementing the three main chess tournaments.

With a few more days to go before the soft closing date for the Melaka Chess Festival, the number of entries have been pouring in from all over the world with the latest coming in from Tajikistan, Russia and neighbouring Indonesia. A total of 115 players have registered to date with many more expected to come in the last few days. On top of that, the registration for the local entries (from Malaysia) has been extended to Friday the 13th of April 2012. This is to allow the organizer to further promote special entry fee rates for school and university students, members of the chess affiliates, winners of the recent Age Group event and to the top players in the country such as past National Champions and National Women Champions the opportunity to play against some of the best players in the region and around the world. 17 GMs from as far as Spain, USA and Russia has confirmed their participation including local IM Mas Hafizul, IM Mok Tze Meng and IM Jimmy Liew

To further add flavour and interest towards the 750 Years Melaka International Chess Festival, the organizers have added 3 more minor events to run concurrent with the Florencio Campomanes Memorial International Rapid Chess Championship 2012 to be held on 21st and 22nd of April 2012. The venue for these three events will be the same as the main venue which is the Hang Tuah World Heritage Hotel Melaka.

The three additional events are the Melaka Age Group Chess Tournament and Melaka IPT Open Chess Tournament, both to be held on Saturday, 21st April 2012, and the third event to be held on the following day, Sunday 22nd April 2012 which is the Melaka Open Team Chess Tournament

For the Age Group event, the entry is open to all school students in the U-10, U12, U14 and U18 age groups and the entry fees is RM10 per player. Medals and souvenirs have been set aside for the top 8 boys player and top 4 girls player in each age category and the top winners of each category will also win a special 750 Years Melaka International Chess Festival souvenir to take home.

For the Open IPT event, the event is open only to IPTA students and the entry fee is set at RM20 per player. For this event, the top 10 men and top 5 women will take home a certificate and a medal, and similarly, the top finishers from each category will win a special memento from the Festival.

On the second day of the event, Sunday 22nd April 2012, an open team tournament will be held with a RM50 entry fee per team. Trophy, Medals, Certificates and a special memento from the event awaits the winning teams with special additional prizes given to the best School Team, Best IPTA Team and best Company/Department Team.
