Teoh Wins Under-10, Jagathees Wins Under-8

11 October 2010, Tronoh – Here are the final ranking results of the remaining two categories, namely, the Under-10 and Under-8 of the Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) played out at the recent UTP Chess Tournament over two days, 9-10th October 2010.

For the Under-10, the winner was Teoh Ern Sheng with 6.5 points and in second is Puteri Munajjah Az-Zahraa bt Azhar with 6.5 points. While third place goes to Danish Hamzah Al-Hadi Noor A with 6 points. There were 13 players in all that participated in this category.

Meanwhile in the Under-8 category was won by Jagathees Guna Balan with 7 points and in second place was Zainoor Ikmal Maisarah bt. Mohamad Noor with 6 points. There were 15 players that participated in this under-8 category.

Tan Jun Feng Wins The U16 UTP Chess 2010

11 October 2010, Tronoh, Perak – In the Under 16 category of the UTP Chess Tournament held over two days, 9-10 October 2010 at the UTP campus in Tronoh, Perak was won by Tan Jun Feng with 6.5 points.

In second place was Fikri Saleh (son of Gilocatur blogger) with 6.5 points There were 35 players that participated in this Under-16 category of the chess tournament.

In the Under-12 Category, Ooi Zhi Yang won it with 6.5 points beating 24 other participants to the winner’s rostrum. In second was Muhammad Noor Azam Mohammad Noor with 6 points.

UTP Open Final Results – Sumant Declared Winner

11 October 2010, Tronoh, Perak – Here are the final results of the Open Category of the Universiti Teknologi Petronas Chess Open held over two days, 9-10 October 2010.

Suman Subramaniam (pix below left) won narrowly with 7 full points and declared the champion and Ahmad Fadzil Nayan (pix below right) is second also with 7 points.

In third place is Elgin Lee Kah Meng with 6.5 points and Nor Ilhamuddin Shaikh Ali in fourth placing, with 6.5 points.

In fifth place was Muhd Syakir Shazmeer with 6 points. Syakir was also the winner of the one-day Ampang Aidil Fitri winner a week earlier organised by stonemaster.

Kramnik, Anand Wins, Bilbao Final Masters 2010

11 October 2010, Bilbao, Spain – Both Kramnik and Anand won their respective games in round 2. Magnus Carlsen is having a torrid time losing his second consecutive game in Bilbao continuing his losing streak from the Chess Olympiad in Khanty-Mansiysk. He had a chance to draw his game with Anand but chose to soldier on and finally lost.

9 October 2010, Kuala Lumpur – The US Chess League has entered its week 7, three weeks to the final week 10.

Here is the latest results of week 7 and subsequent week’s schedule of team pairings for US Chess League 2010.

Standings of the Western and Eastern Division teams:-

For Eastern Division, New England and Boston are near the top two teams with 6.5 and 5.0 points respectively, while Arizona and Chicago head the Western Division for 2010  US Chess League with 5.0 and 4.5 points respectively.

Kubang Kerian Chess Open, Kelantan

5 October 2010, Kuala Lumpur – Latest news from the organisers regarding prizes are as follows:-

1)open categories :

1st place  :Hamper + prizes + certificate +plaque

2nd place : Hamper + prizes + certificate +plaque (with different price from the 1st place )

The National Science University (USM) of the Kubang Kerian campus in Kelantan is organising a chess tournament on the 16th October 2010 for three categories:- Open Category, Under-18 and Under-12.

Malaysia’s Fortunes In Olympiad

8 October 2010, Kuala Lumpur – In today’s StarOnline, SS Quah discusses some of the chess games played by the men’s Malaysia chess team at the recently concluded 39th Chess Olympiad in Khanty-Mansiysk in Siberia, Russia held from 28th September till 3rd October 2010.

He discusses some of the missed opportunities during round 7 when Malaysia met the International Committee for Silent Chess (ICSC) chess team.

He also mentions the memorable third round for the Malaysians when meeting the Lithuanians chess team which had three grandmasters and one international master.

For me, following Malaysia’s fortunes from www.ugra-chess.com with live games of each round was heaven sent. At least ,we could manage to watch some of Malaysian chess games live. If you are a subscriber of either playchess.com or Internet Chess Club.com, then you will be very disappointed as they do not show the Malaysian chess team games.

At the official website of the chess olympiad (www.ugra-chess.com), we can even watch all four board games at one time. And share our team’s fortunes either good or bad, happy or sad, joyful or not. The wonders of the internet!

The players also helped by posting their recent pictures on their respective facebook accounts and share some of their critical moments in Khanty-Mansiysk with Malaysian chess enthusiasts. Again the wonders of the internet!
