Malaysian Chess Scenario

Port Dickson

29 June 2011, Kuala Lumpur – An update from the caretakers of DATCC and the unfolding of on-going and upcoming chess events up and down the country. Read on!

It has been quiet in KL (and DATCC) since the last Warrior event being held at the end of May. Between then and now, there were two International events held in Indonesia i.e. the ASIAN Cities and the ASEAN Age Group, the MSSM event in Penang, and other weekend events that were held out of KL i.e. Setia Chess Club Grand Prix Series in Kuantan and the KLK Perak Grand Prix in Kampar. There were smaller invitational FIDE Rated events held such as the EXCEL Event organized by Jax Tham and the Nf6 Masters event held at DATCC. But of course, the only ongoing event that still goes strong is the monthly InSoFar weekend events namely the Elite Open series, Junior series and Scholarship series that continues to strive despite the silence.

From here on, the chess community can start to look forward to the coming of two back-to-back major events in KL starting with the Malaysia Chess Festival in August and the KLCA Open in September. There is also a rumor that another major international event is being planned immediately after the KLCA Open but this can only be confirmed once the sponsors have agreed to put up the budget for the event. And with just over 6 more weeks to go before the Malaysia Chess Festival clocks off, a few events are in store for those who would like warm up as preparation for these 2 (or 3...) major events.

One of the more anticipated event is the SMK Hillcrest Chess event scheduled for 10th July - an event that was advertised since April 2011. With a lot of goodies and prizes to be given away, the organizer is expecting more than 500 players to participate in its inaugural event. Another event will take place in Perak on the same day which is the KLK Perak Grand Prix to be held in Ipoh, going into its second year after a successful series last year.

Setia Chess Club in Kuantan is also organizing its SCC Grand Prix D series event where the winners will have a chance to be invited to the Grand Final to be held in December.

Currently, UPM is hosting the MASUM Chess Championship to crown the best University Chess Team in the country and the next major chess activity will be the FIDE Arbiter's Seminar to be held in Kuala Lumpur from 30th June to 4th July.

The following is a calendar of chess events for July and August. These have been compiled from various sources as such, please contact the organizer/association for events confirmation or registration. If you would like to add your event to the calendar, or correct some of the information contained within the list, please contact Najib Wahab at najib.wahab@chess-malaysia.com

The Thirty Rules Of Chess

19 June 2011, Kuala Lumpur - here are some golden rules in chess to remember.

The Thirty Rules

TEN OPENING RULES

1.OPEN with a CENTER PAWN.
2.DEVELOP with threats.
3.KNIGHTS before BISHOPS.
4.DON'T move the same piece twice.
5.Make as FEW PAWN MOVES as possible in the opening.
6.DON'T bring out your QUEEN too early.
7.CASTLE as soon as possible, preferably on the KING SIDE.
8.ALWAYS PLAY TO GAIN CONTROL OF THE CENTER.
9.Try to maintain at least ONE PAWN in the center.
10.DON'T SACRIFICE without a clear and adequate reason.
For a sacrificed pawn you must:
a) GAIN THREE TEMPI,
b) DEFLECT the enemy QUEEN,
c) PREVENT CASTLING,
d) BUILD UP a strong attack.

TEN MIDDLEGAME RULES

1.Have all your moves fit into definite plans.
Rules of Planing:
a) A plan MUST be suggested by SOME FEATURE IN THE POSITION.
b) A plan MUST be based on SOUND STRATEGIC PRINCIPLES.
c) A plan MUST be FLEXIBLE,
d) CONCRETE, and
e) SHORT.
Evaluating a Position:

1) MATERIAL,
2) PAWN STRUCTURE,
3) PIECE MOBILITY,
4) KING SAFETY,
5) ENEMY THREATS

2.When you are material AHEAD, EXCHANGE as many pieces as possible, especially QUEENS.
3.AVOID serious pawn WEAKNESSES.
4.In CRAMPED POSITIONS free yourself by EXCHANGING.
5.DON'T bring your KING out with your OPPONENT'S QUEEN on the board.
6.All COMBINATIONS are based on DOUBLE ATTACK.
7.If your opponent has ONE or MORE pieces EXPOSED, look for a COMBINATION.
8.IN SUPERIOR POSITIONS, to ATTACK the ENEMY KING, you must OPEN a file (or less often a diagonal) for your HEAVY PIECES (QUEEN and ROOKS).
9.IN EVEN POSITIONS, CENTRALIZE the action of ALL your PIECES.
10.IN INFERIOR POSITIONS, the best DEFENSE is COUNTER-ATTACK, if possible.

TEN ENDGAMES RULES

1.To win WITHOUT PAWNS, you must be at least a ROOK or TWO MINOR PIECES ahead (two knight excepted).
2.The KING must be ACTIVE in the ENDING.
3.PASSED PAWNS must be PUSHED (PPMBP).
4.The EASIEST endings to win are PURE PAWN endings.
5.If you are ONLY ONE PAWN ahead, EXCHANGE PIECES, not pawns.
6.DON'T place your PAWNS on the SAME COLOR SQUARES as your BISHOP.
7.BISHOPS are BETTER than KNIGHTS in all but BLOCKED pawn positions.
8.It is usually worth GIVING UP A PAWN to get a ROOK ON THE SEVENTH RANK.
9.ROOKS belong BEHIND PASSED PAWNS (RBBPP).
10.BLOCKADE PASSED PAWNS with the KING.

Karjakin Shines At Kings

Pix 1. Position after white played 66.Ra2, black resigned.

18 June 2011, Kuala Lumpur - Karjakin steps up his game to gain a share of the lead at the Kings Tournament in Romania.

TWIC reported that Liviu-Dieter Nisipeanu played an interesting Schliemann Defence as black against Sergey Karjakin. In spite of being two pawns down and the queens coming off Nisipeanu had a way to equality (31...Re4) but after missing it in time pressure he got a difficult (but probably holdable) ending but he didn't manage to save it. Teimour Radjabov was slightly worse as white against Vassily Ivanchuk but he defended carefully enough and the game was drawn. Hikaru Nakamura has taken a step back since his win in Wijk aan Zee and he described his play as garbage after his game against Magnus Carlsen. Carlsen said he didn't sleep well and was glad of such an easy draw.

Meanwhile Chessvibes.com reported that after a rest day dedicated to indoor football, on Friday the King’s Tournament in Medias, Romania resumed. The fight between Nakamura and Carlsen, an uneventful Breyer Ruy Lopez, ended in a move repetition at move 34. Radjabov-Ivanchuk was a Semi-Tarrasch that was always about equal. Nisipeanu tried the 3…f5 Ruy Lopez against Karjakin, who came up with an interesting novelty at move 15 and eventually won a rook ending after six hours of play.
