Final Ranking Excel Senior

30 August 2011, Kuala Lumpur – Here is the Final Ranking list of the Excel Senior FIDE Rated Tournament held in July/August 2011

First and champion of the tournament went to Jax Tham who scored 9 points and a superior tie-break point. Second position fell to Gregory Lau with 9 points each. Third went to Choo Min Wang with 7.5 points, fourth to Eddy Kwan Nam Seng, also 7.5 points and fifth, early favourite, Wahid Karim with 7 points.

The rest is as shown below from 6th – 12th placing.

29 August 2011, Kuala Lumpur – Team Chesskidz of Singapore won the ASTRO Merdeka Team Open Rapid 2011 with 26.5 points. Second place went to PNOY Expats with 26 points. Third place was won by Chesskidz Shock Troopers with 25.5 points.

28 August 2011, Kuala Lumpur - Team Melaka (Azirul) with IM Giam (centre). Team Melaka scored 9 pts after five rounds during the Merdeka Team Rapid yesterday. Another four rounds will be played today to complete the 9 rounds of Swiss System.



Arbiters were strict on placement of team players. Melaka were penalized due to this infringement.

27 August 2011, Kuala Lumpur – Valentine Gunina (pix 1) is leading at the ongoing Superfinal 61st Russian Championship 2011 with 6.0 points after 7 rounds of play. In second place is Baira Kovanova with 4.5 points and Natalia Pogonina in third place with 4.0 points.

The Superfinal 61st Russian Championship among women is being held from 18 to 28 August 2011 at MM Botvinnik, Moscow, Russia. The tournament is dedicated to the 100th anniversary of MM Botvinnik. This year's Women's Super Final is held with ten leading Russian women chess players.

The tournament involved: the current Russian champion Alisa Galliamova (2492), former world champion Alexandra Kosteniuk (2497), the leading female chess players of Russia include Gunina Valentine (2487),Natalia Pogonina (2442), Anastasia Bodnaruk (2431), Helen Hare (2419) , Tatiana Shadrina (2373), Olga kettlebell (2371), Bair Kovanova (2354), Daria Charochkina (2310).

Competition format is held on a round robin, 9 rounds. Time control: 90 minutes on the first 40 moves followed by 30 minutes of the game with 30 seconds per move starting from the first, each member state of Russia. Game Days: 19-23, 25-28 August Bank Holiday: August 24 Game Start Time : 15-00 daily, last tour beginning at 12-00

Wang Rui Wins Merdeka Individual Rapid

27 August 2011, Kuala Lumpur - GM Wang Rui of China won the 7 round Swiss-System Merdeka Individual Rapid 2011 by scoring 6.0points and a superior tie-break pts. Three others scored 6.0 pts comprising of GM Sanchez Joseph, PHI, IM Barbosa Oliver, PHI, IM Yu Lie of China.



Notably, NM Lim Zhuo Ren of Malaysia scored 5.5 pts with respectable 8th placing.

The Star On Chess Festival

26 August 2011, Kuala Lumpur – In today’s The Star Online, SS Quah discusses about the highlights of the ongoing Malaysia Chess Festival 2011 at the CitiTel MidValley Hotel, Kuala Lumpur.

It had begun from the 17th August 2011 and will run until the 28th August 2011. Four chess events had just ended yesterday with the crowning of the winners late afternoon. The Blitz, 8th Dato’ Arthur Tan Malaysia Open 2011, 6th AmBank Malaysia Chess Challenge 2011 and 2nd KLK Tan Sri Lee Loy Seng Seniors Open 2011 all came to an end yesterday afternoon.

He also discusses about the one day Swensen Age-Group Chess held last Sunday, 21 August 2011 which had a group of Iranian students as part of their package tour of Malaysia. The one day rapid is ongoing today and the Merdeka Team Rapid over Saturday and Sunday.

The numbers are already swelling beyond the capacity of the existing hall. Come join in the fun and the finale over this weekend! See you all there!

Two Games From DAT Malaysia Open 2011

26 August 2011, Kuala Lumpur – Here are two games from the 8th Dato’ Arthur Tan Malaysia Open 2011. One was between IM Lim Yee Weng (pix above) of Malaysia against Karunanayake Mayuri during round 1 and the other between GM Li Shilong of China and IM Barbosa Oliver in the fifth round of the tournament.

IM Lim Yee Weng played the Reti Opening in the King’s Indian Attack, Yugoslav Variation. Lim, playing white, manages to outsmart his opponent in the endgame where his last pawn is about to queen.

Li Shilong Declared DAT Malaysian Open Champion 2011!

25 August 2011, Kuala Lumpur – Congratulations to GM Li Shilong (pix above) of China for scoring 7.5 points from 9 rounds and declared the new champion of the 8th Dato’ Arthur Tan Malaysian Open 2011 held at the CitiTel MidValley Hotel, Kuala Lumpur. He beat 97 other participants to win the DAT Malaysian Open title. Shilong drew his last 9th round against Wan Yunguo of China.

Positions 2-6 were all won by Chinese players beginning with IM Lu Shanglei (2nd, 7.0 points), GM Wen Yang (3rd, 7.0 points), Wan Yunguo (4th, 6.5 pts), GM Wang Rui (5th, 6.5 pts), WGM Wu Wenjun (6th, 6.5 pts).

Positions 7-9 were all won by Vietnamese players beginning with GM San Chez Joseph (7th, 6.5 pts), IM Dimakiling Oliver (8th, 6.0 pts) and GM Salvador Roland (9th, 6.0 pts).

In tenth position, IM Nguyen Duc Hoa from Vietnam with 6.0 pts. Last year’s defending champion GM Cao Sang from Vietnam landed in 20th position with 5.5 pts.

25 August 2011, Kuala Lumpur - Here are the round 8 rankings before the start of round 9 this morning for the top 41 players for 8th DAT Malaysian Open, 2nd KLK Tan Sri Lee Loy Seng Seniors Open 2011 and 6th AmBank Malaysia Chess Challenge 2011.


For the top five of the Malaysian Open, all of the candidates are from China with GM Li Shilong at the top with 7.0 points. The next two are from Vietnam including the defending champion, GM Cao Sang. Followed by two from Philippines - Roland Salvador and Nolte Rolando. No Malaysians inside the top 40 this year. At 41 is Cheah Cheok Fung of Malaysia with 4.5 points.

24 August 2011, Kuala Lumpur - Here are the 9th Round pairings for the Dato' Arthur Tan Malaysian Open, 6th AmBank Chess Challenge and 2nd KLK Tan Sri Lee Loy Seng Seniors Open respectively.



GM Li Shilong of China leads in DATMO with 7 points, S M Sharon of Bangladesh in AmBank with 6.5 points and GM Kayumov Dmitry of Uzbekistan in Seniors Open with 7 points.



Today is another rest day for the participants before they come back tomorrow to complete the final 9th round beginning at 9 am.

Zaidan Leads AmBank Challenge 2011

23 August 2011, Kuala Lumpur – In yesterday’s round 6 of the 6th AmBank Malaysia Chess Challenge 2011 between Zaidan Zulkipli, Malaysia and Sarvinoz Kurbonboeva of Uzbekistan resulted in a win for Zaidan Zulkipli on top board. Zaidan made waves last year when he participated in the European Chess Club Cup 2010 event in Plovdiv, Bulgaria where he represented a mixed Irish chess team.

The 6th AmBank Malaysia Chess Challenge is one of three concurrent chess tournaments running at the same time during the Malaysian Chess Festival 2011 at CitiTel MidValley Kuala Lumpur.

This win gives unheralded Zaidan Zulkipli a five point score and currently co-leads with S.M. Sharon of Bangladesh. Both Zaidan and Sharon will meet on top board round 7 held this morning, 9 am, 23 August 2011.
