En. Abdul Hamid Majid representing Malaysian Chess Federation gave a warm thank you to the participating players and the new batch of organising committee members at University of Malaya, headed by Sharifah Itasha Jamalullai. En Abdul Hamid mentioned that the UM’s Chess Team Open Event has been an annual event for the last ten to eleven years since its inception. However, since the batch of organising committee members keep changing every year, the historical beginnings of the chess tournament has been lost. As always the case, at this morning’s briefing, En. Abdul Hamid pointed out that out of twenty assistants and helpers at the tournament venue, only three of them know how to play chess. Nevertheless, he appreciated their assistance.
En. Abdul Hamid mentioned the emergency phase about three days before the event, the organising committee discovered to their horror that their tournament hall has been booked by another party and made alternative arrangements for today’s tournament at three separate rooms, two of which are fully air-conditioned. Kudos to the Tournament Director, Sharifah Itasha Jamalullai and her team of helpers for persevering and overcoming extreme conditions to make this tournament another successfully run chess tournament! He also thanked the participating players for fully cooperating with the arbiters and the organising committee with some strict rules but for the increased pleasure of better playing conditions.
