All Drawn At Semi-Finals FIDE Candidates

14 May 2011, Kuala Lumpur – At the FIDE Candidates Matches in Kazan, Russia, the tournament has reached the Semi-Finals stage. Four players are at Semi-Finals and they are Gata Kamsky, Boris Gelfand, Alexander Grischuk and Vladimir Kramnik.

TWIC reported that both Boris Gelfand and Vladimir Kramnik got serious opening advantages with white in the second round of the semi-finals of the FIDE World Chess Championship Candidates matches. Gelfand in particular had a winning position, at least according to his opponent Kamsky. But he didn't find the right way to exploit this and Kamsky then found his way to a draw. Kramnik got what looked like the kind of position he enjoys but in this case Grischuk found a very nice plan which kept the advantage within bounds and allowed him to hold the draw.

The tree illustrates the scenario of the players that have been eliminated at Quarterfinals and the standings at Semi-Finals stage.

Results of Semi-Finals:

Early favorite, Levon Aronian, was eliminated by Alexander Grischuk during the Quarterfinals with a 4.5-3.5 in favour of Grischuk.

Tough Chess Trials

13 May 2011, Kuala Lumpur – In the Star News Portal, SS Quah discusses about the recently concluded Malaysian SEA Games Chess Team Selection Trials at the DATCC last Sunday, 8 May 2011.

Tight finishes in both women and men’s selection trials created a stirring and one Armageddon finish in the men’s. The most consistent player was IM Mas Hafizulhelmi who finished first in the men’s section of the trials.

Lim Zhou Ren’s Ninth Round Game vs Sumant

 

9 May 2011, Kuala Lumpur – Here is the ninth round game between NM Lim Zhou Ren against Sumant Subramaniam (pix above) during the 2011 National Selection Trials for the Malaysian SEA Games 2011. Plus one extra game between Sumant Subramaniam and Fong Yit San in the earlier 8th round of the 2011 National Selection Trials at DATCC, Kuala Lumpur.

This result of this game triggered the playoff between Sumant Subramaniam and NM Kamalariffin Wahiduddin to determine the last remaining team player bound for the SEA Games in Jakarta later this year. It was reported that the playoff  game went all the way until Armageddon stage when Kamalariffin (handling the black pieces and needing only a draw), lost his game.

8 May 2011, Kuala Lumpur – Here are the final results of rounds 8, 9 of the SEA Games Malaysian Selection Team Trials at DATCC.

Drama is still unfolding at DATCC as the final fourth placing is still unsure for the men’s chess team and a playoff is going on between Sumant Subramaniam and Kamalariffin Wahiduddin. For certain though is the elimination of one IM from the Malaysian SEA Games chess team to Jakarta.

MAS, Najiha, Camilia Excels At SEA GAMES Team Trials

7 May 2011, Kuala Lumpur - The Malaysian SEA GAMES Team Selection played two rounds today. DATCC blog reported that Round 6 continued earlier today with the last game between IM Lim Yee Weng and Tan Jun Feng just ended a few moments ago.

There were some upsets for the Men section with Sumant Subramaniam victorious against IM Mok Tze Meng and former NM Kamalariffin Wahiduddin triumphant against current NM Lim Zhuo Ren. The remaining 3 IMs - Jimmy Liew, Mas Hafizul and Lim Yee Weng won against their opponent - Fong Yit San, Fong Yit Ho and Tan Jun Feng respectively.

In the Women section, Camilia Johari did well to beat WCM Nur Nabila Azman Hisham. Leading the event with similar points is Fong Mi Yen who beat Tang Kar Khei. Other results were Nurul Huda scored a point against the youngest competitor Puteri Munajjah Az Zahran, Tan Li Ting drew with Puteri Rifqah Fahada whilst Sarika Subramaniam lost against WFM Nur Najiha Azman Hisham.

Chess Blitz and Rapid At Karnival Jom Gempau, Melaka

6 May 2011, Kuala Lumpur – There will be a one-day chess rapid and blitz during the JomGEMPAU Carnival in Malacca on the 28th May 2011. The number of rounds of play will depend on the number of entries. If the number of entries is below 120 people, then it will be six rounds and if above 120 people, then it will be seven rounds of rapid chess games and blitz.

Four categories are offered: Men, Women, Under-15 and Under –12. Details of the event follow below:-

FIDE Candidates Matches 2011

 

5 May 2011, Kuala Lumpur – In Kazan, Russia, the FIDE Candidates Matches has begun today and eight candidates that includes Levon Aronian (pix above), Gata Kamsky, Veselin Topalov, Vladimir Kramnik, Teimour Radjabov, Alexander Grischuk, and Boris Gelfand will be competing to become the next challenger to the current reigning World Champion, Vishy Anand. The dates of the Candidates matches are from May 3rd-27th, 2011.

 

 

Game Format: The matches will be played over four games. Two days after these matches end, the second round starts, with the winner of Topalov-Kamsky against the winner of Gelfand-Mamedyarov and the winner of Kramnik-Radjabov against the winner of Aronian-Grischuk. These matches will also consist of four games. The final match will consist of six games.

The matches are being held in Kazan, Russia. It’s the capital city of the Republic of Tatarstan where it ranks as the sixth largest city of Russia.
