Tun Syed Zahiruddin Chess Open 2010-2011

20 February 2011, Kuala Lumpur – Here is a new chess team tournament announcement from University Malaya.

The Annual Tun Syed Zahiruddin Team Chess Open 2010-2011 will take place on the 5th March 2011 at the Dewan Sri Tanjung, Kolej Kediaman  Ke-9 Tun Syed Zahiruddin, University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur.

Each team will consist of four players and entries must reach the University Malaya chess organisers before the 1st March 2011 and submitted to gaithri90@yahoo.com.my or on the day of the competition counter with a payment of RM90.

Jax Steamrolls At Excel FIDE

20 February 2011, Kuala Lumpur – At the Excel FIDE-Rated Tournament Feb.-March 2011, Jax Tham continues his dominance with a solid 4 points lead after the fourth round.

Azam (above pix left) is second with 3.5 points. While Chia and Puteri Rifqah at joint third with 3.0 points. Bernard, Faqih and Hafid at joint fifth with 2.0 points each.

National Close 2011 Update!

19 February 2011, Kuala Lumpur – DATCC has released the initial pre-registered list of players up to noon of the 19th February 2011 for the upcoming National Closed Chess Championship 2011 due 16th-20th March 2011. The tournament director is reminding players to make full payment before the 20th February 2011 dateline, after which the cost will back to normal rates.

There are currently 51 players for the Open Section and 12 players for the Women Section. The reigning Women NC 2010 champion Wong Mi Fen has pre-registered before the dateline while the Open NC 2010 champion has yet pre-register before 1st March 2011.

While those wanting to qualify for the early-bird discount have until tomorrow 20th February 2011 to make their payments.

Four In The Lead, Excel FIDE

 

19 February 2011, Kuala Lumpur – At the EXCEL FIDE-Rated Chess Tournament Feb.-March 2011, four persons are in the lead with two full points. They are Jax Tham, Bernard Ng, Puteri Rifqah and Azam.

Excel FIDE Rated Tournament

18 February 2011, Kuala Lumpur – Latest news is that the gods of chess have answered. The Excel Chess Academy is organising a special FIDE-Rated Chess Tournament for FEB-March 2011. It will be a closed 12 person tournament over 11 rounds of play.

Here are the list of players, the schedule of the tournament and the pairings of each round from 19 February 2011 till 6th March 2011 at Excel Chess Academy in OUG, Kuala Lumpur. It is held over three weekends.

The Original Mr First Saturday Himself!

18 February 2011, Kuala Lumpur - It has been quite a while that our Malaysian version of First Saturday Chess Tournament has disappeared from the local scene for whatever reason. Let's revisit some facts and history of the original Mr First Saturday himself!

He is the chess organiser of the First Saturday Classical Chess tournament in Budapest which has a fairly long and steady history of chess players around the world entering and gaining their respective GM and IM norms.

Larry Christiansen Wins Bermuda Chess Open

17 February 2011, Kuala Lumpur – In Bermuda, GM Larry Christiansen won the Bermuda Chess Open held from 11-13th February 2011. A tiebreak playoff against GM Pascal Charbonneau was needed to determine the winner.

Le Quang Liem Declared Aeroflot Open Champ!

17 February 2011, Kuala Lumpur – Chessvibes.com reported that despite a spectacular loss against Ivan Cheparinov in the penultimate round, Le Quang Liem won the Aeroflot Open for the second time in a row. The Vietnamese grandmaster edged out Nikita Vitiugov and Evgeny Tomashevsky on tie-break after the three finished on 6.5/9.

Here is the last 9th round game between Le Quang Liem, the winner of the Aeroflot Open 2011 and Mamedov Rauf which ended in a draw.

Here is the 9th round game between Tomashevsky and Sjugirov which gave Tomashevsky a share of the leadership with an important win. The Semi-Slav [D46] opening transpired during the game.
