Wesley So’s Third Round Win, Team Chess Asian Games

21 November 2010, Kuala Lumpur – In the Team Chess third round Philippines met Bangladesh chess team in the Asian Games, Guangzhou. On board 1, GM Murshed Niaz of Bangladesh met Super GM Wesley So from the Philippines.

Wesley So found the strongest continuation with black 28…Nxb2! creating more opportunities for an attack on white pieces on c5 and c3.

If white plays 29. Qxb2, then black should play 29…Rxc5, followed by 30…Rxc3 with the bishop on g7 protecting c3 square. A follow-up attack by the black pawn 31…b4 attacking the c3 square further.

The win on board 1 helped Philippines to beat Bangladesh 3-1 in the third round of the team chess event in the 16th Asian Games 2010, Guangzhou.

At the moment, India is way ahead with 3 solid wins and 6 points, and China is in second place with the same 3 wins. In third is Vietnam with 2 wins and 1 loss.

Philippines is in sixth position with 2 wins and 1 loss. While Bangladesh is in 12th position with 1 win and 2 losses so far.

Pogonina vs Nebolsina, Superfinal 60th Russian Championship Women

21 November 2010, Kuala Lumpur – The Superfinal 60th Russian Chess Championship Women is now taking place in the Moscow Central House of Chess from 16th November till 27th November 2010.

The chess tournament is a round robin with participation of some of the world’s reknown women grand masters/international grandmasters: Tatiana Kosintseva (2581), Nadezhda Kosintseva (2576), Alexandra Kosteniuk (2507), Alisa Galliamova (2487), Valentine Gunina (2479), Natalia Pogonina (2472), Olga Girya (2435), Anastasia Bodnaruk (2407), Nazi Paykidze (2401), Svetlana Matveeva (2389), Tatiana Schadrina (2384) and Vera Nebolsina (2377). Jasur Madjidov At Cochrane Sports Center of Excellence!

20 November 2010, Kuala Lumpur – Latest news from Pusat Kecemerlangan Cochrane, Kuala Lumpur is the arrival of Mr Jasur Madjidov (right), an FIDE Master chess player. He is a chess trainer and is out to help the Sports Center of Excellence, a well known high performance school in the field of sports, to propel the center as a new chess magnet in Kuala Lumpur.

He is to assist En. Suhairi Hussin with the development of chess in Kuala Lumpur, in particular and Malaysia in general. We wish him a grand welcome to Malaysia and hope to see more of him during chess events in Malaysia.

He is currently conducting private chess lessons with interested chess enthusiasts in Kuala Lumpur. If you are interested in joining the chess lessons conducted by Mr. Jasur Madjidov, please contact Suhairi Hussin, hp : 012-3631591.

According to Suhairi, Mr. Madjidov’s chess classes scheduled for 2pm,5pm and 8pm time slots have been a “sold out”.

GM Larry Evans Passes Away!

20 November 2010, Kuala Lumpur – Grandmaster Larry Evans, prolific writer and commentator, passed away in Reno aged 78 last 15th November 2010. He was the U.S. Chess Champion in 1951 at the tender age of 19 and continued to win four more U.S. titles and four further US Open Championships.

The Journal Gazzette article by Emma Brown wrote:

“Evans, who wrote for insiders as well as for those whose passion for the game had yet to be discovered, died Nov. 15 of complications from gallbladder surgery at a hospital in Reno, Nev. He was 78.

A sparring partner of the American chess phenomenon Bobby Fischer, Evans was also a prodigy. He announced himself as a new chess talent when he was 15, winning the prestigious Marshall Chess Club championship in New York. Four years later, in 1951, he won the U.S. Chess Championship.

Evans became an international grandmaster in 1957 and to win four more U.S. Chess Championships, the last in 1980. In mid-life, however, he decided to build a career on writing about chess.”

Carlsen Withdraws From World Candidates Matches!

19 November 2010, Kuala Lumpur – In today’s edition of theStar Online news web portal, SS Quah discusses about the recent withdrawal of GM Magnus Carlsen from the Candidates Matches of the World Chess Championships.

Magnus is the star in the chess world and it takes off the shine from the Candidates Matches, if he is not participating. His star appeal to chess is enormous and losing his presence in the Candidates Matches would hurt, or at least dent the appeal.

Aronian Declared Blitz King!

18 November 2010, Kuala Lumpur – GM Aronian Levon (pix below) was declared the Blitz King despite losing the 37th and 38th rounds to Sergey Karjakin and Peter Svidler respectively, ended with 24.5 points. In second place was GM Radjabov Timour with 24.0 points.

The table below is the standings up to rounds 38 from the official website.

GM Magnus Carlsen finished in third place with 23.5 points.

In fifth place was GM Hikaru Nakamura with 21.5 points, finishing behind GM Boris Gelfand who had a similar 21.5 points but slightly better tie break points.

Aronian Leads At World Blitz Chess Championship, Moscow

18 November 2010, Kuala Lumpur – At the World Blitz Chess Championship 2010 in Moscow, GM Aronian (pix left) leads with 18.5 points after 28 rounds of blitz chess. In second place is GM Carlsen with 17.0 pts. There is ten more rounds of blitz chess going into the third day of play.

Malaysia Gain Two More Gold Medals

17 November 2010, Kuala Lumpur – Azizulhasni Awang won the men’s keirin bicycle race gold for Malaysia’s second and the bowling team of Adrian Ang and Alex Liew won Malaysia’s third gold of the Asian Games in Guangzhou.
