28 October 2013, Kuala Lumpur – In Tanjung Malim Perak, Mohd Saprin Sabri scored 6.5 points and emerges as the sole winner of the UPSI Chess Open 2013 held over two days at Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris. Saprin made a stirring upset over IM Mas Hafizulhelmi in round 5 of the UPSI Chess Open 2013 on the second day of the tournament.

UPSI Open 2013–27 players with 2 points after round 2

26th October 2013, Kuala Lumpur – At Tanjung Malim, Perak, the UPSI Chess Open 2013 got underway. After two rounds, 27 players have scored the perfect two full points. Among them were IM Mas Hafizulhelmi, AM Ahmad Fadzil Nayan, Wong Jianwen, WFM Nur Najiha, WCM Nur Nabila, UPSI’s alumni – M Huzairin Hussin, Ex-Selangor Open champion – Mohd Saprin Sabri and many others.

A total of 112 players are participating in the two-day chess tournament with a 60 minute time control. The Primary and Secondary Sections are also concurrently running at the same time.

Anas Nazreen Bakri Wins Gerak Khas Rapid Melaka 2013

19 October 2013, Kuala Lumpur – The Catur Gerak Khas Rapid took place in Sg Udang, Melaka today and was won by FM Anas Nazreen Bakri. Anas takes home the RM300 champion’s prize and a medal. Second, Kamaluddin Yusof. Third, Hermanu Latif.

Peter Svidler wins Russian Superfinal 2013 for 7th time!

15th October 2013, Kuala Lumpur - In Nizhny, Novgorod, Russia, Peter Svidler won the Russian Superfinal Chess Championship 2013 by winning the tie break rapids 1.5-0.5 against Nepomniatchi. For the record, Peter Svidler has won the Russian Superfinal for the seventh time. Svidler won the Russian title in 1994, 1995, 1997, 2003, 2008, 2011 and 2013.

Here is the round 1 game between Peter Svidler and Ian Nepomniatchi during Russian Superfinal 2013.

The Russian Championship Superfinal 2013 for men and women took place from 5th to 14th October at the State Historical and Architectural Museum in Nizhny Novgorod.

Both events was held according to round robin system with ten players. The total prize fund for both groups is 6 million RUB (approx 138,000 EUR). Valentina Gunina won the women's title with 7/9 half a point clear of Alexandra Kosteniuk.

Johor emerges new MAKSAK 2013 champions!

Johor proud winners of MAKSAK Team Chess 2013 in JB

6th October 2013, Kuala Lumpur – In Johor Bahru, the host state, Johor emerged as the new MAKSAK 2013 champions during the MAKSAK Chess Tournament 2013 held over the weekend, 4-6th October 2013. Johor scored 17.5 Game Points and 10 Match Points.

In second place, Kuala Lumpur with 16.5 Game Points and 10 Match Points. While in third place was Terengganu with 14.5 Game Points and 6 Match Points.

Meanwhile in the losers’ pool, team Kedah became champions of the losers’ pool with 11 Game Points and 6 Match Points. Penjara was second and PDRM in third place.

UPSI Open 2013 announced!

5th October 2013, Kuala Lumpur – the UPSI Open 2013 chess tournament has been announced! It will be held on the 25-27th October 2013 in SITC Hall, Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris, Tanjung Malim, Perak. It is a joint collaboration of Kelab Catur UPSI and Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia with support from UPSI’s Sports Center.

Caruana leads after Round 10, FIDE GP 2013

4th October 2013, Kuala Lumpur – In Paris, Fabiano Caruana of Italy has overtaken the lead after round 10 of the FIDE Grand Prix Chess 2013. He shares the lead with Boris Gelfand with 6.5/10 points. Caruana beat Tomashevsky in round 10.

Hikaru Nakamura leads at Paris GP 2013

Hikaru Nakamura leads at Tashkent after round 8 FIDE GP 2013

2 October 2013, Kuala Lumpur – In Paris, the FIDE Grand Prix 2013 is taking place. After the 8th round, Hikaru Nakamura is leading with 5.5 points in a field of 12 players. This is the final FIDE Grand Prix of the series which takes place in Paris from 22nd September to 5th October 2013.

Grischuk and Caruana need to win this event to qualify for the Candidates via the Grand Prix otherwise Mamedyarov takes that place.

Universiti Malaya team wins UTP Invitational 2013

2nd October 2013, Kuala Lumpur – In Seri Iskandar, Tronoh, Perak, the three day team chess tournament – UTP Invitational Chess Team Tournament 2013 was held over the weekend 27-29 September 2013.

Team Universiti Malaya won by 14 MPs and 25.5 Board Points. In a close second is PCA U-15 with 12 MPs and 23.0 Board Points and third, UTP Dragon with 9 MPs and 16.5 Board Pts.
