Kramnik outmaneuvres Korobov in Game 1, Round 5, Tromso World Cup 2013

V Kramnik vs A Korobov

24th August 2013, Kuala Lumpur - Here is the winning game by V Kramnik in round 5, game 1 against Korobov in the FIDE World Cup 2013 in Tromso, Norway.

The week-in-chess website reported that Vladimir Kramnik managed to beat Anton Korobov after five hours play in the only decisive game of the first day of the quarter-finals of the FIDE World Cup. Korobov was highly critical of his opening choice and "I was completely unprepared for the game, it was the wrong opening I think after move 15 I was nearly hopeless or immediately lost and it's a bad thing the torure last for five hours else I could just go home and prepare for my service with the white game. The position it was the wrong strategy at all, just to choose this with the isolated pawn he is very strong and he played very convincingly but then he gave me chances." Kramnik was happy to have won and with his early play but highly critical he didn't find an almost immediate win with 38...Qb4 and he even wondered if Korobov was close to a draw at one stage. "My play should be better." was his verdict.

8 Players Through To Quarter Finals, World Cup 2013

23 August 2013, Kuala Lumpur – The final eight players, Tomashevsky, Caruana, Kramnik, Svidler, Andreikin, Korobov, Vachier and Kamsky. Le Quang Liem lost the last rapid game last night in a marathon fourth game of round 4 and allowed Peter Svidler to progress to round 5.

The week-in-chess website reported that Peter Svidler was again not impressed with his own play against Le Quang Liem, he seemed in quite some trouble in the first rapid game before getting active and obtaining a draw. The second game was level for a very long time but Svidler first won bishop and knight for rook and then in a still more or less equal position found a way eventually to cause his opponent real problems. Svidler's play in the latter part of the game was pretty impressive.

With the loss of Le, Asia’s hopes were also dashed. There are now four Russians, one Italian, one American, one French and one Ukrainian left standing.

World Cup Tromso 2013

In last night’s first game of round 4, the week in chess website mentioned that Peter Svidler got into a terrible mess against Le Quang Liem, Svidler knew more theory but this in fact did not help as Le's new 13.0-0-0 (Fressinet went the other way in the Alekhine Memorial against Vitiugov a game Le did not remember) covering the b-pawn left Svidler struggling. 14...f5 may not be the right move as 15.Nd5! is very annoying. 23.Rxd5! Rxd5 24.e6+! was white's concrete win missed by both players. After Le missed this Svidler was back in the game. 33.Kb3 allowed Svidler to equalise and 38...Ke6 playing for a win may have been best although probably the position should be drawn. Svidler was just relieved to have escaped.
