Evan Capel, Fong Yit San Jointly Wins PACU Open 2012

30 Dec 2012, Kuala Lumpur – The PACU Chess Open 2012 held in Sg Petani, Kedah was jointly won by Even Timothy Capel of Penang and Fong Yit San of Perak when they both scored 6 points and identical tie-break points.

Third, Lim Chuin Kai, fourth, Amri Ibni Hajar, fifth, Lim Kian Hwa, sixth Wong Yinn Long and seventh, Lim Wei Sheng. All winners from 3rd-7th, all scored 5.5 poinths but separated by tie-break points.

IM Mas Successfully Defends Title in Kuantan Grand Finale

Winners of 2nd Kuantan Grand Finale Rapid Chess Championship 2012 Pahang

27 Dec 2012, Kuala Lumpur – News of the 2nd Kuantan Grand Finale Rapid Chess Championship 2012 from the organisers of the tournament held at the Vistana Hotel, Kuantan, Pahang last Sunday, 23 December 2012.

IM Mas Hafizulhelmi (Kelantan) emerged as the champion in the 2nd Kuantan Grand Finale. IM Mas successfully defended the title he won last year with 6.5 points. IM Mas had overcomed all his rivals except for Kamaluddin Yusof (Abang Bro) who managed to hold him to a draw. Second place went to our very own Pahang player – brother, Mohd Khair Wahidduddin with 5.5 points while third place goes to Kamaluddin Yusof (Abang Bro) from Johor with 5 points. Fourth place goes to Muhd Syazwan Zulkifli (Terengganu) with 5 points and Fifth rank went to Noor Ahmad Fadzillah (Kedah) with 5 points.

Without suffering any losses IM Mas Hafizul’s bounty of RM100 for each round has been brought forward to the next year’s Finale.

Final Ranking 3C Complex Chess Open 2012

24 Dec 2012, Kuala Lumpur – Here are the official final rankings of the 3C Complex Chess Open 2012 held at Komplex 3C MPSJ, Bandar Sunway, Subang Jaya on the 22 December 2012. The tournament went the full 8 rounds of rapid Swiss-System with 160 players participating.

Mohd Amin Mohd Noor won with 7.5 points and declared the champion.

Our prayers and doa of Al-Fathihah to the family of Mohd Sabirin Sulaiman, wife and two daughters, Siti Khadijah and Siti Aisyah, who perished in a car accident in the early hours of 23 Dec 2012 travelling to Dungun, Terengganu from Kuala Lumpur after the 3C Complex Chess competition on the 22 Dec 2012. Fong Yit San, Tan Jun Feng leads into Round 9, Nat Jr 2012

21 Dec 2012, Kuala Lumpur – After the completion of round 8, National Junior 2012 Boys category, Fong Yit San and Tan Jun Feng are on 6.5 points each. They played in contrasting styles in round 8.

Fong Yit San lost to Aron Teh Eu Wen on top board while Tan Jun Feng won against Lim Kim Siong on board 2. Meanwhile second seed, Mark Siew fell further behind when he lost to Rosli Ahmad Afiq Afyfy on board 3.

In round 9 tomorrow morning, Fong Yit San will meet Rosli Ahmad, the conqueror of Mark Siew, on top board. While Tan Jun Feng will meet Lim Chuin Kai on board 2 and Aron Teh will meet Low Jun Jian on board 3. Aron Teh has outside chance if both Yit San and Jun Feng fall tomorrow and Aron Teh wins. The top seed Yit San has the driving seat with slight superior tie-break over Jun Feng. The same with Rosli Ahmad. He has to beat Fong Yit San tomorrow to stand any chance of winning.

RSC Open Junior Chess Tournament 2013

21 Dec 2012, Kuala Lumpur – Here is another new chess tournament in the new year of 2013. The tournament is called the RSC Open Junior Chess Tournament 2013. It will be held at the Royal Selangor Club, Bukit Kiara Sports Annex, Jalan Bukit Kiara, Kuala Lumpur on the 20th January 2013, Sunday. Four age-categories involved comprising of U-9, U-11, U-13 and U-15. The organiser has assured that separate prizes are available for Group A and B. Mark Siew Takes Lead, National Juniors 2012

19 Dec 2012, Kuala Lumpur – At the National Juniors Chess Championship 2012, Mark Siew Kit-Tze has won all four rounds and is alone on 4 points. Mark Siew is the current leader in the boys’ Natonal Junior Chess Championship 2012 at the Arthur Tan Chess Center, Wilayah Complex, Kuala Lumpur.

On 3.5 points are three players comprising of Fong Yit San, Tan Jun Feng and CM Amier Hamzah b Mohd Zuhri.

National Juniors 2012

18 Dec 2012, Kuala Lumpur – At the National Junior Chess Tournament 2012, two rounds of classical play completed today and the favourites won their early rounds. Fong Yit San, Mark Siew Kit-Tze, Aron Teh Eu Wen all won their first two rounds easily. A total of 56 players are participating in this year’s boys section of the National Junior 2012 held at Arthur Tan Chess Center, 4th Floor Car Park, Wilayah Complex, Jalan Munshi Abdullah, Kuala Lumpur.

Meanwhile in the National Junior 2012 (Girls), a smaller group of 19 girls are participating. The top seed, WCM Nur Nabila Azman Hisham and second seed, WFM Nur Najiha Azman Hisham are playing to form by winning their first two rounds. Third seed, Tan Li Ting and fourth seed, Nithyalakshmi Sivanesan also won both their early rounds today.

Nguyen Duc Hoa of Vietnam wins Penang Open 2012

15 Dec 2012, Kuala Lumpur – In Georgetown, Penang, the 23 year old, IM Nguyen Duc Hoa (pix above) of Vietnam won the Penang Heritage City International Open 2012 with a score of 7.5 points and a superior tie-break.

Second, IM Nguyen Van Huy of Vietnam, third, Ma Zhonghan of China, fourth FM Ronnie Lim Chuin Hoong of Malaysia and fourth, youngster, Yeoh Li Tian of Malaysia.

Nik Ahmad Farouqi and IM Mas Hafizulhelmi finished in 29 and 30th spots with 5.5 and 5.0 points respectively.

DATCC FIDE Rated Classical in January 2013

15 Dec 2012, Kuala Lumpur – Here is an annoucement of an upcoming FIDE-Rated chess tournament in January 2013.

Under its new management as of 1st January 2013, DATCC will organize its first DATCC FIDE Rated Classical event for 2013 from 24th January until 28th January 2013.

Dubbed the DATCC GOLDEN SPECIAL, the event will cover the long holiday weekend during Thaipusam and Prophet Muhammad's birthday starting on Thursday, 24th January and concluding on Monday, 28th January. Rounds are schedule either during the public holidays days, or after office hours on regular days as per the following schedule:

The FIDE Rated Classical event will use a time control of 90 minutes plus 30 seconds increment per player and will be played over 9 rounds using Swiss Pairing System (Swiss Manager).

This will be the first event in DATCC long list of activities planned for 2013. The GOLDEN SPECIAL offers a total prize fund of RM 2,000 with special prizes allocated for the best juniors (U12/U17), best female, best Veteran and best Unrated – subject to minimum 3 players playing in each category. 
Entry fees is set at RM30 for players with a FIDE Rating of above 2200, RM50 for players between FIDE Rating 2000 and 2200, RM100 for players with a FIDE Rating of below 2000 and RM150 for players without any FIDE Rating.

The event will also provide a platform for players to gain FIDE Rating points, or for those who do not have any rating points, to start getting one for themselves.

On the same note, DATCC is also planning to conduct its loyalty program starting from 1st January 2013 allowing DATCC members to win additional prizes set for its members on top of the usual prizes offered that they may have won. More news on the Loyalty program will be published in the website as 2013 draws closer. For those who sign up as DATCC member, the entry fees will provide a discount between RM10 and RM30 for each entry received.

Closing date for this event is 20th Jan 2013 and entries are limited to the first 100 paying players only. Entries received after closing date WILL incur a RM50 penalty provided seats are still available. And again, for those who sign up as DATCC Loayalty Member, no late fees will be added.

LCC goes to the wire in round 9

10 Dec 2012, Kuala Lumpur – London Chess Classic 2012 goes into the final round 9 with a possibility that there might be a tie for the top spot should circumstances present itself.

The Week In Chess reported that Vladimir Kramnik beat Gawain Jones to keep alive his chances of retaining his London Chess Classic title. Kramnik will need to beat Michael Adams with black and hope that Carlsen can do no better than draw with Anand as white in the final round. If they tie then there will be a single game Armageddon blitz playoff.

Carlsen Way Ahead, London Chess Classic 2012

9 Dec 2012, Kuala Lumpur – The seventh round of the London Chess Classic 2012 resulted in all drawn games with Kramnik given a rest. Rankings after round 7 show Carlsen leading with 17 points with 5+ points ahead of Kramnik at 12 points.

The Week In Chess reported that current leader Magnus Carlsen drew a Sicilian (a surprise) with black against Hikaru Nakamura (3.c3 a surprise prepared for Topalov in London earlier in the year). Carlsen sacrificed a piece for two pawns which may have given Carlsen the better chances but quite quickly he was playing just to draw. Carlsen now definitely will exceed Kasparov's 2851 rating record. Kasparov tweeted his congratulations to Carlsen on overtaking his 13 year record.

Carlsen, Kramnik, Anand, Nakamura won 5th round, LCC2012

7 Dec 2012, Kuala Lumpur – In London, the London Chess Classic 2012 has entered its 6th round tonight. Last night, 6th December 2012, the fifth round was played and four decisive games emerged. Carlsen, Kramnik, Anand and Nakamura all won their respective games. Aronian had a bye round in the fifth.

Watch Nakamura’s 5th round game against Judit Polgar. Nakamura had Judit in a mating net by move 47. The Week in Chess reported that Hikaru Nakamura surprised Judit Polgar with his opening choice, got an initiative and finally found a mating net.
